Changing my mind about WoW on Consoles

First thing, before anyone thinks I am fond of consoles, the last console I owned for my own use was the original Nintendo. My kids had the later Nintendos growing up, but they were not for me. I have been computer gaming since 1981 on a Commodore Vic-20 and always felt the kind of games I preferred were on computers and not consoles.

Now, I have been playing with every kind of system, every os, playing around with tablets (but still no consoles) and for the first time, I am seriously thinking of buying one for myself. Why? I play 2 games, WoW and Final Fantasy 14. Thats it. I was thinking of working towards building a system for those games (even though I can get frame rates I like with medium settings on my current system) and I realized if WoW were on say a PS 5, I could get that and play the 2 games I want for the cost of a mid level video card. I could still use a keyboard and mouse and get everything game wise I need out of it.

Long story but by simply using the HDMI in port (using DisplayPort currently) on my monitor, I could very easily switch from my current computer to a console with a system that could set a very good minimum for those games.

My be the wrong time to think about this with all the new CPU and GPU changes happening right now, but I really think it may be worthwhile.

At the very least I can see WoW going mobile (more tablet) since they are hardcore onboard with Apple’s new M1 chip and if they really do release 32 core CPUs with 128 GPU cores…

I don’t see why not as long as they force you to use keyboard and mouse.

I’ve been playing with an Xbox controller using the ConsolePort addon for years as all roles.

M+, arena, BGs, raiding…

It is 100% doable.

I would like to see someone bind all the controls to a controller. On my ele I have like 10 skills alone I use. Lava burst, Flame shock, Frost Shock, lightning bolt, chain lightning, stormkeeper, healing stream totem, tremor totem, earth shock, earth quake and im not going to finish.

I was mainly talking about using the console as the “CPU” and still using the keyboard and mouse setup.

Kinda like the opposite of what some of you are looking at with a regular CUP and a controller…

I absolutely hate controllers today. I still prefer the Atari 2600 joystick

That is extremely easy to do.

No modifiers = 9
LT modifier = 18
RT modifier = 27
LT + RT modifier = 36
(if using elite controller like I do) = 45

I have played every single class with a controller.

None of them use all 45 binds, only my Druid comes close.

Wont happen mainly due to MS and Sony delaying updates/patches until they are approved. That could be the main reason why there is a lack of a console port.

Wish it were otherwise because FFXIV seems to do ok. But I know that could be a HUGE ask

They delay the pc patches to line up with the consoles. Why warframe pc servers are not linked with console and why they get content way faster than console players.

You really think Blizz capable of porting wow to console? Will never happen.

Yeah I get that it is doable, I just don’t want them to develop a system around it and I don’t want it to be a default option.

The other thing I just thought about, this game wouldn’t work on consoles lol. The biggest reason people love WoW is because of how blizzard lets us mess with the game’s UI with addons. Very few games give us this degree of freedom with the interface. Let alone online games.

Then there is the infrastructure of cross-platform networking and anyone who plays warzone knows how buggy that is.

WoW without addons though… that’s a pass for me.

That sounds like a hand cramp especially if you need to move as well. I personally think there are to many buttons to keybind. I can see it done for games like gw2 and eso where every class has x amount of skills that can be used.

Really not that difficult at all

I do all of that and heal/tank at the same time on one of the highest APM classes in the game.

What program do you use?

It’s not like 1 button has 1 function on controller. Think of it as fancy keyboard. Same as with keyboard, you can use 1, Ctrl-1, Shift-1, Alt-1. You have control buttons. You can assign way more than 10 actions on controller. Also controllers have mods, think different layout of keyboard depending on what you are doing.

None. Just the addon ConsolePort is all you need.

Blizzard natively supports controllers now in Shadowlands. You dont need any 3rd party applications.

Sync your controller to your PC, get the ConsolePort addon, and youre off to the races.

I’m 38 years old, not old but not young either. I’ve played wow a long time and been working at a desk for the majority of my life. I am so over sitting at my desk playing wow and it’s one of the reasons I cannot play for long periods of time anymore. I also have carpel tunnel. I wouldn’t even care if I couldn’t use half my skills, I just want to not sit at a desk anymore.

I agree and I wish they would let us play on console like many other MMOs have done.

Oh did not know they added native controller support

This was pretty much where I was at. Im a decade+ younger than you are, but I just despised spending all day at work sitting at a desk just to come home and again, sit at a desk. It was uncomfortable and aggravating, even after spending hundreds on a chair.

Playing with a controller allows me to take a more comfortable posture in comfortable seating conditions. Like I tell my friends, if I could not play this game with a controller I would’ve unsubbed years ago.

Blizzard needs to pay the ConsolePort guy, its the only reason why my sub is active.

Yep, they just added it for SL and it is extremely solid. If anything it’s worth checking out if you have even a slight interest in trying WoW with a controller.
