Change my view: I believe Azeroth moving in the direction of more nuanced political intrigue rather than “rahhh orcs and humans killing each other” is a better story and leads to more interesting writing possibilities.
It does not. Its like saying you have to kill someone in the story for that story to have impact. You dont, you just dont know how to write a climax without death being thrown in the mix.
It does not make for a better story and doesnt lead to more interesting writing possibilities, ill give you my hot take as a quite clear example of this being done plain wrong:
Yrel did nothing wrong. She was completely justified in her light crusade.
The reason is quite simple. You cannot make me care for the wellbeing of orcs who are just waiting for the chance of genociding the space goats again. None of the bad clans did anything to redeem themselves, and by all means, are still largely responsible for the acts they committed during the WOD expansion, because now they were influenced by Garrosh rather than corrupted by Gul dan.
The WoW writers suck at writing morally complex situations. They even suck at writing the war itself, since logistically they only seem able to write individual battles and then pretending that a large scale conflict was decided by them. Making a tyrannical zealot being completely justified in their actions takes quite a large level of dumb writing, and they seemed to hit every one of those bad points.
