Chain Pulls - Understand Them

So what is a chain pull?

It is when the tank (hopefully) charges in a dungeon and hits mob after mob, dragging them along a path. In a sort of “chain” to group them at a point for final combat.

It is not a totally normal practice among most players, and it can get messy. And it requires most of the team to help, at the very least a good tank and a good healer, or a good tank and a good DPS.

How do you mess up a “chain pull”, you pull from it and break the chain. How do you you really mess it up? Well, then you blame the tank for not having aggro.

None of this is going to matter, but I just wanted to explain some basic principles of a chain pull.

Also, totally unrelated, I have a fluffy cat with a fluffy butt, and she seems to think I am cool for some reason. I have no idea why, her food and water dish is filled.

Chain Pulling:

When an overconfident player, queued as tank (but not necessarily in tank spec), runs ahead and aggros multiple packs of mobs while not bothering to actually do any threat. The “tank” frequently takes an extreme amount of damage forcing the healer to cast to keep them alive, resulting in all of the mobs aggro’ing to them, killing them, and causing a wipe.

The tank will then proceed to complain about how the group doesn’t know how to “chain pull” / are pulling extra packs and initiate a vote kick on the healer.

That is not a “chain pull.” Chain pulling is when you link pulls together, without stopping to drop combat. Pull the first group, do some damage, wait for it to get low, then charge to the next pack before the first is completely dead. It leaves the dps to finish off the remaining enemies while the tank secures agro on the next pack. Then repeat. The objective is to keep dps uptime to a maximum while not over-burdening the healer.

Chain pull - obligatory with current BiS trinkets.

That is not chain pulling

A tank who can’t keep aggro while pulling like that shouldn’t be pulling like that.

There is the “definition”, and then there is the sad reality.

Shouldn’t, but still do.

No, that is not a chain pull. A chain pull is starting the next group immediately after (or sometimes slightly before that) when the first group dies. This “drag the whole dungeon to the boss” crap is not chain pulling. It’s over-pulling. And I sure wish they’d do something about it, like crank up the DR on AoE abilities hitting >5 targets. It’s not quite stern enough to de-incentivize this degenerate “gameplay”.

I’ve never actually defined chain pulling like this lol. This sounds more like “mass pull” which I’ve also heard.

I usually think of a chain pull as rapid single pulls, usually engaging the next “link” of the chain when the previous link is badly hurt so there’s zero chance of aggro loss. The “chain” refers to the zero drop in combat status; you’re always in combat prior to the boss when chain pulling. But maybe that’s just me.

Tanks who think they can mass pull without saying anything or actually using skills as they mass pull are a complete menace.

I think for the “average player” they believe it means tank pulls a bunch of mobs however far he takes them (usually to a Boss).

With this thinking, don’t dps any mob so they stay on the tank. You just follow as fast as you can, start dps when the tank stops.

Chaining is adding additional mobs to a current active pull in order to reduce downtime and increase DPS efficiency.

pull the whole timewalking dungeon

Tanks should play the way the entire group agrees on playing and groups should not pull beyond their ability and without communication.

Yes it is.

It’s good but most tank fail at it because half these dungeon attack players randomly. Look at Darkcleft first room. Saw many keys wasted right there.

this is true. it is also true that dps who plant their feet, pop all cds and start dpsing the millisecond the tank enters combat, should not be dpsing like that.
