There’s era servers for that? Go play them if you want a classic experience. This is Season of Discovery, they’re experimenting and trying for new experiences.
It’s a seasonal server, and I’m guessing P4 is around the corner and therefore they’re deploying this now in preparation for it.

So when people are able to breeze through the actual content of the game in a few hours, and then just sit around in capital cities waiting for the week-long lockout to end on the raid they can’t find enough people for (and doesn’t drop any interesting loot anyway), do you actually expect to increase player retention?

You mean like how they “re-released” cataclysm, the levelling content people have literally been doing for the past 15 years?
Ask yourself why people are playing a mod of vanilla if they dont actually want to play vanilla, and why allowing people to skip the vanilla levelling process only seems to reduce the amount of players
Because this is SoD not vanilla. People want to play with the new stuff.
There is no new stuff. And if that’s what people actually wanted, wouldn’t they be playing retail?

The absurd state of PvP in SoD has made many people quit tbh. Dev team can’t balance nothing correctly.
The “new abilities” aren’t new, they’re recycled from retail.
The “new raids” aren’t new, they’re vanilla dungeons where the bosses have more HP and retail mechanics (which are all just recycled from vanilla anyway).
The “new events” aren’t new, it’s just the gurubashi arena on a bigger scale.
It’s a collection of mini-games apeing retail because that’s what the idiots in charge think people want. No matter how many times they are told, no matter how many times people ask for Classic+, despite all the evidence to the contrary, no matter the constant bleeding of players, they still think the retail design philosophy is the way forward. Phase 1 was successful because it actually added something new. Every following phase has been a failure because they didn’t add anything new.
PEOPLE DO NOT WANT TO BE AFKING IN A CITY WAITING FOR A MINI-GAME TO BECOME AVAILABLE SO THEY CAN PLAY WORSE VERSIONS OF GAMES THAT ALREADY EXIST.
So just go back to era if you don’t like SoD.

The Classic client is for Classic games. SoM was Classic, for all its flaws. SoD was in phase 1.
