Is there a catch up mechanic for Splintered Spark of Awakening?
I am very tempted to skip the weekly quest on my DK, but don’t know if I will end up missing out on half a spark.

I’ve been getting the half-spark I missed last week from various open world bosses this week. Not sure if that’s a general catchup or if it only applied to the one special extra half-spark.
There has been spark catch up every tier so far, there’s no reason to assume that’ll change.

There is a catch-up mechanic, yes. As it stands, for every weekly spark half you don’t claim from the weekly quest, your ‘catch-up’ gains +1 half spark in reserve that would be randomly granted by engaging in content that would reward it, most commonly being from looting bosses in dungeons or raids.
The very first week, we started with a +1 half in reserve already so we could have one full spark on the first week (one from weekly quest, the other from other content). Main point is, regardless how many weeklies you miss, you won’t really ‘miss’ a spark fragment as long as you do things to catch up. It’s kind of like an invisible cap that goes up by 1 half fragment per week, so if someone comes back after not playing at all on week 5 of this season, they would have 3 full sparks available to them (2.5 to earn from catch-up sources and 0.5 from the weekly).

I havent seen the catch up mechanism work yet. Ran LFR/Norm/Heroic for the awakened raid on 1 character and didnt get a single splintered spark. Did the weekly pvp and got my weekly but the other pvp weekly quest said that I already got my weekly spark. Not sure where else to get these.
Ok so I got 2 from winnings 3v3 matches.

To add my experience, I have received it on various alts from heroic dungeons and LFR bosses which I “think,” is a change as in previous seasons I could only get the catch up from Mythic dungeons and world bosses.
But my luck may have been bad previously
I missed the 1st 4 weeks or so and i did the weekly, killed all the world bosses, killed the fyrakk mini boss, did storm portals, did grand hunt, dream bloom, 3 seed weekly, anything else i could think of and for that i only got 1/2 splinter so apparently the catch up must be locked behind mythics and raids. not very alt friendly at all

It may have changed since the 3rd week, or possibly it was bugged and I should NOT have gotten it from a heroic dungeon? Or perhaps you can but it’s just low chance?
All possible with Blizz nowadays which is a shame, I say if you’re behind then you should get one per dungeon or even one per boss. Who cares it’s a catchup just let people get caught up
