I was wanting to upgrade some old Dragonflight gear for appearances.
Was the DF catalyst location removed?
Did my hunter not progress far enough into the questline to unlock it?
sources I was able to find say there is no unlock requirement?
Does the “old” catalyst use the same currency/charges as the new one?
Basically, am I still able to upgrade old items to collect appearances, or do I just vendor all the bits I’ve been keeping?
And if the answer is “vendor”, does that mean there’s no way to collect the upgraded appearances now?

Yes, you should still be able to upgrade Dragonflight pieces. AFAIR, the Catalyst wasn’t removed lasttime I looked.
Just fly there and check.
Though I see the quest to unlock it has been removed
hmm it’s not there for my hunter.
just an empty room.
I’ll go check on a character which completed the campaign, and report back

AFAIK, any catalyst will work for any expansion’s gear, including the Shadowlands one.

i was in the wrong place.

for anyone trying to find it without co-ords, check wowhead for the location of Antuka
so does that mean i’ll be burning catalysts which are relevant for current content?
i’m ok with that if they’re alts i just quest with.
are catalyst charges “per character”?
i don’t want to use charges on one character, then discover that i used charges which i should have saved for characters i actually play.
i can’t find them anywhere in my currency tab?

Charges were per character.
As I recall, charges for Dragonflight were no longer needed after 11.0

Exactly.
Catalyzing gear from prior expansions requires no charges. But they catalyze at whatever their item level determines as their tier, and there’s no longer any way to upgrade that. If you have a piece of LFR gear, it becomes the LFR tier and that it shall stay. If you want normal tier appearance, you’ll have to bring a piece of normal-raid ilevel gear to catalyze. (Crests and stones for previous expansions no longer exist.)

I played through Shadowlands and DF, and had no idea about the catalyst stuff.
No idea how it passed me by.
I have a vague recollection of being sent to Tyrhold for some quests, but I go into “autopilot mode” and don’t pay attention to things.
I was about to vendor some old gear, but my ATT addon pointed out that I’m missing secondary appearances from some items.
I’m still playing “catch up” with DF stuff, and don’t think I’ve noticed any SL items which can be catalysed, but am only just now returning there to try finish up a bunch of covenant stuff.
