I said it. It's out in the open now.
Cataclysm was fine. It had problems like every expansion (Alliance zones largely not being finished storywise for example) and Dragon Soul was just a bit of a let down. But the gap between Cata and MoP was just too long.
Much like with MoP, a lot of the hatred (Ignoring the asinine "pandas lul" comments by 9 year olds) was after-the-fact because of how incredibly long the end of the expansion and the start of the next one was.

For the Horde? Yes.
For Alliance? Hell no, their zones were barely finished and stuffed with memes in place of actual character development.

Also, Krinblock really needs to flesh out his posts. They're super threadbare.
One of my favorite things about Cata, which is very unrealistic to do every expansion, is to bring all the zones up to date story wise. To show progression in the world and how things change. How your efforts leveling prior really helped, did nothing, or only maintained the status quo. I am all about keeping things up to date, especially in the "main" zones. EK and Kalimdor.
I strongly disagree with that. But to each his own I guess.
I struggle to remember anything that happened in Cata endgame.
There was some Night Elf stuff in Hyjal... then some Rock elemental stuff... Some weird Indiana Jones references in Uldum... and then Garrosh lost his entire airfleet because he's an idiot?

Cata will always be the worst expansion to me from a story perspective. Worse than WoD. Worse than BfA. Everything I hate about the story now began in Cata.

No, a winner.

By contrast everything I hate about WoW's story started in MoP.
And !@#$ing Tong.

I mean, I can intellectually see where you are coming from, but honestly like 3/4 of the Alliance quests feel like 1:1 retreads as far as leveling content goes. Some changes on the margins, but overall meh. As for the raids/endgame. The BoDA seems pretty fun when it hits.
No expansion is perfect, but my only major problem with Cata's 80-85 plot is that Game Deathwing is a completely different character from Book Deathwing. Irreconciably so. And not in a good way.
On the other hand 1-60 is full of faction war and screaming tentacle monsters, both absolute garbage.

To be frank, i'm not even convinced BfA is THAT bad. When I think about the story, it's mostly freaking out about Windrunners actions and the Burning of Darnassus.
For me there's still a potential for an interesting narrative, hell there already HAS BEEN a interesting narrative in many places, just a controversial narrative as well. For WoD, that never materialized imo.

WotLK was the Xpac where we beat the boss. The guy hanging over us from the end of WC3. The focus of Sylvanas's character arc. The destroyer of the Alliance of Lordaeron. The annihilator of Silvermoon. The person who's victory drove Illidan to madness (at the time) and indirectly, Kael to desperate betrayal.
Darrowshire, the plaguelands, a mess of tragic anecdotes? He's the root.
And then he was dead.
And suddenly, Blizzard finished arguably the biggest, most visible story in their MMO, and had big parts of the plot going "well, what do we do now?"
And we got Cata. Areas written and developed by different teams, areas left unfinished, everything feeling scattered and sometimes nonsensical. A big bad who, while definitely in the old lore, more or less just popped out of nowhere and nearly destroyed the world.
Sylvanas finished her story arc. But she's popular, and we didn't even use her in the last battle against Arthas? No worries, she's gone from being the ultimate revenant to... a bizarrely totalitarian expansionist, but muh free will I guess.
Garrosh? Troubled youth thrust into a major leadership position, who wants to see his people prosper, following the old ways and code of honor? Sounds good! So, lets make him a 40k Ork Warboss!
Cairne? Oh wow, we keep forgetting to put him in the story. Let's just die off that lose end. Did I say "die"? Whoops, I mean... well, no that's exactly what I mean.
BfA makes me more nervous about where we are headed. But Cata's story was much worse.

Only if you made the mistake of leveling through the Eastern Kingdoms.
Leveling through Kalimdor Alliance side was awesome.

I’d rather endure memes than go through the guilt trip of Kalimdor.
Guilt trip?

I had to agree with Wrathion on that one. The dude is a freaking waiter in a bar out in the middle of nowhere. He doesn't have a leg to stand on in lecturing others on geopolitics and international diplomacy.
I will never not hate Cata. If you wanna talk about a story breaking expansion, it's that one.
Because of Cata, every character starts after Wrath, then travels back in time, with Vanilla content completely scrubbed from the game. The whole process was laughable, and obviously a decision made when Blizzard thought they could do no wrong, and were on their high horse after hitting 12 million subs. I'd wager Cata making things horrendously confusing is a decent chunk of the reason a character boost is included with every expansion.
