I know Cata has a special place of hatred amongst WoW players but honestly I loved it.
The dungeons (at release) were exceptionally difficult and felt like mini raids.
More got added to existing continents that expanded on the stuff we had opposed to having a brand new continent.
The changing of the map made the old azeroth feel different.
Deathwing flying around and randomly killing this was hilarious.
Got to see Ragnaros again which was cool.
I just really enjoyed that expansion despite all the hate it gets.

I love cata as well, it’s my favorite.

It’s my favorite expansion of all time, closely followed by BC.

Wrath will always be my favorite, because I started in BC and Wrath was when I peaked in many ways: finally hit level cap, raided with some cool guys and gals for the first time, experience an expansion more or less at the edge of content roll out.
Cata is a close second, because it was more of what I had in Wrath and it was great getting to revisit old zones that I plowed through without much understanding of what they were or what the story content was, and the revamp was cool. I know that didn’t effect me at 80-85 but I was glad they did it, and I thought the new zones were great, likewise the dungeons. Loved the difficulty increase like you said. Actually wiped in Stonecore more times than I can count. And having to actually CC mobs!? Crazy times guys ha ha.
I think people who play this game think they know what the most hated expansion is, but if we did a blind poll, I bet we’d all be surprised. BfA would probably get the most hate, primarily because it is the latest. The only ones I would say might be safe are BC and Legion. That nostalgia is one heck of a buffer.

Oh wow I totally forgot about Deathwing randomly appearing and raining down hellfire. That alone made the expansion awesome . And it was an achievement to be hellishly killed by him lol
I agree cata was great … good times … good times

Completely forgot about CC’ing mobs. I can’t remember the dungeon but it was the Egyptian themed one. No one ever expected to be wiped by 4 mobs on the way to getting the dungeon boss.
I’d love to see WoW do a series of 5-7 player mini raids instead of just mythic dungeons.
Might be too much to ask though.
I thought the old world revamp was exceptionally well done. I levelled a dwarf shaman during the prepatch, and the journey from 1-60 felt so smooth, it was wonderful.

I liked the difficulty as well, but more so the later difficulty because I wasn’t ready for how hard things were on launch for heroics. I later got used to them tho and how I had to target only the tanks target to avoid them losing threat. Not to mention the one shot mechanics that existed which made you not want to mess up. Also, I actually liked the last patch and raid somewhat compared to most people who apparently hated it.
Thing is, they really weren’t.
They just felt like it because they absolutely gutted healers in the patch, and included a few (very few) 1-shot mechanics for tanks.
My holy priest pug healer essentially died forever in that expansion. One of my oldest, favorite characters and I haven’t touched it since.
Oh I did too. Raid finder wiping was hilarious. I remember one time we were in their for hours because a druid refused to die on morchok. It was such a hilarious good time. I think we all ended up just logging out of the game because the druid refused to give up even though the boss had 99% hp left and the rest of the raid was dead.
As a healer, literally going oom after 5 cast didn’t feel like a “hard dungeon” but rather a " horrible class design".
It wasn’t until dragon soul that the game felt right and then the hatred bled over into MoP and gave it an undeserving bad rep

I enjoyed Cata. Especially going around and checking out all the revamped zones. It was pretty heartbreaking exploring Dark Shore and seeing the inn I used to go to destroyed and former quest NPCs now permanently dead.
A few quests that I remember being a lot of fun were the one where you spoke to three NPCs and each one told a different story on how they defeated Deathwing. lol Think the same zone had a quest to boot goats off a cliff or something.
I’d really like to see an expansion focusing on healing Azeroth from all the damage that’s been done. Blizz doesn’t need to make up new places to go when there’s so much of importance right in front of us.

Cata was by far my favourite storyline in WoW. I read every story, bought every book and couldn’t get enough of it.
Too bad the in-game implementation of it was an absolute mess.
Cata is my 3rd favorite expansion. Don’t have any problems with it
Firelands was the only part of Cata I liked. The pre-raid content to invade the firelands was fantastic. Its unfortunate they never really expanded on similar content.
Also disappointing we’ve never really ventured further into the elemental plains. Always a chance in the future though.
I leveled 8 characters to max during Cataclysm. Then Mists, I was all like, meh, and stopped playing halfway through.

Wrath will always be my favorite of the expansions.
But I swear they made a new circle in hell for Cata. I truly HATED it with the burning fury of a thousand dying stars.

Cata was lowkey the best PvP expansion, i had a blast during it because of that. It only got ruined due to Blizzard’s mishandling of MMR in S10 and overpowered PvE gear in S11, which was still possible to play around, at least in Arenas (RBGs were a cluster).
I can see how the PvE crowd got bored though, first tier was forgettable outside Sinestra, something most people haven’t really seen while current, second tier was a mixed bag, from absolutely horrible mechanics (Ryolith and personal opinion Alysrazor, who got very old very fast) to some of the best encounter design in the game (Heroic Rag).
DS was just forgettable outside Spine who’s remembered again for all the wrong reasons (long fight with repetitive mechanics encouraging class stacking).
Also it lasted way too long for the amount of content it offered on the PvE side of thing.
I feel like I would’ve liked Cata. I play Classic from time to time because I grew up with it. I have a lot of emotional connection to Dun Morogh, Mulgore, Durotar, etc… but when I started playing again 7 months ago, I noticed the zones were all wonky lol. I finally realized that Cataclysm changed the world, and to me, I didn’t mind at all. I have classic for a nostalgia rush. Although I wish I was around to play Cata or MoP. I feel like I would’ve liked the game.
Edit: Mix of Classic, and new it probably what I would’ve liked the most.
