Typical Melee enjoyer here. Made a Shadow Priest in Legion Remix.
Specced into the artifact talent that lets me move while casting.
Oh. My. God.
What are we doing?
Why isn’t this a thing? We’ve wasted so much time being stuck in one spot. You don’t understand… like I refused to play ranged specs for so long because I need to move around like an eclectic idiot 100% of the time.
Let’s skip to the brass tax. It’s so much fun.
Before trying it, I would have probably had the opinion that casters shouldn’t be able to move because of balance issues. After trying it, I literally do not care what balance problems come up.
It is the difference of “I do not like playing ranged DPS specs” to “Holy crap this is almost as fun as melee.” It doubles the number of specs I wanna play.
BM for hunters is pretty mobile and I don’t think you have to stop for much of the time.
Back in MoP give or take, we classes had talents that made you be able to cast your filler spell while moving. For destruction warlocks, that was incinerate. They got rid of those talents pretty quickly though.
Mobility is definitely more useful in some content than others, but I think they just don’t want to give casters excessive mobility because then they are like melee but with a 40 yard range. Trying to balance things out a bit? That being said, I would like to see some more mobility added to a few specs and some fights are annoying because of the constant stutter stepping we have to do.
Problem with that is casters are then just better than melee in everything. Melee are mobile because they have melee range (ret is a ranged class so that doesn’t count).
I actually hate casting while moving. I use movement to cancel casts. Being able to move while casting in Remix has just messed me up. I’ve teleported to Dalaran multiple times by accident because I keep forgetting I have to press ESC to cancel the cast and not jump or move.
Cast while moving is a double edged sword, YES it is absolutely busted to be able to keep DPS while being able to dodge marked floors and is a very fun way to play…on the other hand casts not canceling by my movement like say in a dungeon when i start a cast on a oops mob and i move and see the cast still going makes me scream internally! lol (but honestly the later is a me problem XD)
Blizzard knows that it is fun. But it does take away the challenge of playing. I remember casting Tranquility on the run, like a six or eight second cast and it was great. Picking a spot to channel is fun too.
I would love if all ranged specs could move and cast. BM is the only fully mobile ranged spec in the game right now. It would be nice if all the others could be as well, but I also know it would make balance even more… unbalanced.
It used to be the case that when you got a few moments to stand still as a caster, you felt like you got to rip a bunch of damage. Now instead of feeling like a god if you had some free time to stand still, you need to plan all of your movement-ability bloat to keep as much uptime as possible just to not feel useless.
Planning your rotation is different from the feel of the game making moments of standing still not feel as rewarding. Now it feels worse having to move because you’re chosen by RNG to do a mechanic than it feels good to have a moment of casting. I have been playing arcane mage this season and choosing where and when to shimmer has felt rewarding and a part of the class identity, but the moment I don’t need to think about any of that, I don’t really get excited, I’m doing the same thing I was doing.
Most casters had some degree of casting while moving back in the MoP-ish era, and it was truly glorious. Hunters could move with Aimed Shot, and that was all I needed to make hunter my main from then until Legion.
