Capturable Pets in Dungeons?

Interesting dungeon. I was in a dungeon to kill Mechagon. (Still working on flying in BFA, Mechagon last faction to go, and I’m slightly over halfway between Honored and Revered.)

Then I noticed there were battle pets in the dungeon. And capturable pets. I got some nifty ones, including H4ND-EE and Experimental Roach (who is used in strats on Xu-Fu). After my group killed King Mech, I stayed in the dungeon and made my way back to the capturable pets and caught a bunch. It’s nice that they’re not tradeable, so having them indicates that I got them for myself.

I thought I missed the Experimental Roach, but I didn’t. I had caught one. A rare, too. I must have been so excited at all these pets, I forgot I did get the Experimental Roach.

I had decided that my Timeless Mechanical Dragonling (I have three) had pretty much replaced my Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling. Thanks to Razor Talons and Flame Breath, plus Decoy, I can use him for almost anything I normally use the Pandaren Dragonling.

It was here, when capturing pets, that I realized that’s not really the case. The recurring damage of Flame Breath, especially with Razor Talons, will burn down a pet before it’s captured.

I wanted to ask, what do you guys think about having capturable pets in dungeons? Since I’m still an expansion behind, I’m not really up on what the experience was when Mechagon was the high end dungeon.

I was thinking I probably wouldn’t have liked this idea. You’d have pet collectors holding up the dungeon while they try to capture pets, which isn’t fair to non-pet collectors. Or, if they did like I did and waited till the end to backtrack and capture pets, if a group has more than one pet collector, they’d be competing over the same pets. H4ND-EE, so I’m told, only spawns once (although some on Wowhead have said that if you leave the dungeon, then reenter it, you can get him to respawn).

I was wondering why not have capturable pets in the pet dungeons themselves? Except that pet dungeons are made in really old content. There is no current Mechagon Pet dungeon, and that was last expansion.

Mechagon was an example of how not to implement battle pets in an instanced dungeon IMO.

However, Tazavesh in Shadowlands is an improved version of ‘wild pets in a dungeon’. Instead of having spawn locations spread out, collectors can zone in and find a spawn right at the entrance. Reload the instance multiple times if the specific pet you want isn’t spawning, and you’ll get all the possible wild pets from the dungeon in no time.

There are other spawns throughout the dungeon as well, of course, but this way puts less strain on groups that are actually trying to complete the instance. And less pressure on collectors who are looking for their perfect wild pet without burdening a group.

If they can keep implementing wild pets in dungeons like this (spawn point at the entrance, all possible pets have a chance to pop up in that location), I think I’m ok with wild pets inside 5-player instances.

What I also discovered, in my second visit to Mechagon, is that my method of staying behind after everyone leaves isn’t quite foolproof. One of the areas where pets spawned was cut off to prevent someone from going back. And the pets behind that barrier were not accessible to me.

If every wild pet has an equal chance of spawning, I’m okay with that. But in Mechagon, the H4ND-EE only spawns in one place. If it happened to have spawned behind the barrier, I would have had to hold up my group while I capture it.

It’s probably been a while since you’ve been through Mechagon, but there is one area in which drone bots wander about, zapping anyone within a certain area. The object is to move past the bots without getting within their radius.

In every group I’ve been in that goes through Mechagon, there’s always someone who has trouble with this and holds up the entire group. If H4ND-EE was placed there, or some other pet, I could have probably captured a couple of pets while I waited for that one person to finally make it past the bots.

Did you do Mechagon Heroic through LFR? Or was it a Mythic group?

It was a Heroic 5-person Dungeon. Just doing it for the faction hit. I am so over not flying in BfA.

I also unlocked the Mechagnomes for the Alliance, so I can start playing with them. I haven’t unlocked the Tiragarde Humans. The dungeon for that is just too difficult. If I buy Shadowlands, I’ll come back at 60th and solo it or something.

But the dungeons are no longer required to unlock the Kul Tiran, Dark Iron, or Mechagnome Allied Races.

ALLIED RACES

  • The dungeon quests for unlocking Kul Tiran humans, Mechagnomes, and Dark Iron Dwarves are no longer required. After accepting the dungeon quest, speak to the NPC again to choose to skip the quest.

That’s good news. After several consecutive wipes on the final boss in that dungeon, I ended up leaving. I was a Disc Priest and AoE healing is really the best way to win that fight. But the Tank was under the impression that he had to complete this dungeon to unlock the humans.
