I was trying to unequip mount equipment from the mount equipment slot, but it wouldn’t let me as I can’t drag it out from the slot or find the button to remove it.

Equipment is single use like gems, you just replace it with new ones.

Is it possible to remove it so I won’t have any mount equipment equipped if I wanted to?

I rather doubt it. I think they used the “socketed item” model, and there’s never been a way to remove a gem from a gear socket without replacing it with another gem. Well, except if you put the gear item into Void Storage, but that hardly helps for mounts.
Why on earth would you want to do that?

Right now there are disconnect bugs happening when using certain mounts with an equipped water walking item. But it will be a high priority to fix that so rather than looking for a workaround it will be better to wait until they fix it and avoid those mounts until then.

It’s so moronic and still an issue in 2024, well almost 2025… I worked so hard to get the “Angler’s Water Striders” mount and it was turned into an equipment item that I didn’t know couldn’t be equiped. So when I delete an old toon, it goes with it instead of moving it to another character or sharing it automatically for all our heroes.
