Didn’t use my pet at all and now that pre patch has rolled through I can’t place it on the AH. What’s the deal? Says I can’t list an item with used charges but I never used it.

Did you put them in a cage?
As far as I know if you own a pet you have to put it in a cage before you put it on the auction house
I see the whelping up on the AH but its the same item I have. Not in a cage
You can’t un-use a pet. What do you mean by “put it in a cage” ?
Ok so maybe that’s a later expansion 
Battle pets, you can’t put them on the auction house unless you put them in a cage

I don’t and I’m not sure why you would think that. Using a companion is a one way street.
Yep having the same issue with any pet I bought before the pre-patch dropped.
Thats a later expansion my dude. Pet battles and “caging” is a MoP feature
