Can't reset UI because Cache folder a file in it is open

I have had an issue since the prepatch came out in July where if I change a weapon on a character that has two, the game freezes, and forces me to do a hard restart (Hold down the power button until it shuts off), in many cases I can’t use the Ctrl-Alt-Del because everything freezes.

Up until now, restarting the system has allowed me to restart the game, and find that the character in question has swapped their weapons and is playable until I swap weapons again.

This time when I restarted the computer, I am getting a constant pop-up that says “Application has been blocked from accessing Graphics hardware. Application Wow.exe has been blocked from accessing Graphics Hardware.” And this is popping every three seconds.

I tried to go into the folders and rename my Cache, Interface, and WTF folders, but when I try to rename the Cache folder, I get an error message that says “The action can’t be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program. Close the folder and try again.”

This is confusing as I am attempting to rename this folder immediately after turning on the computer before starting any other program.

I am also unable to run the Scan and Repair from the Battle.net launcher as that option is grayed out along with ‘check for updates’ and ‘Uninstall.’

Microsoft PowerToys has a utility called File Locksmith which might help you find the offending app/process/etc.

  • Open Microsoft Store (press start button and type store, click on Microsoft Store)
  • In the search bar, type PowerToys
  • Install
  • Navigate to your Cache folder, and right-click on the Cache folder.
  • One of the options revealed will be Unlock with File Locksmith (towards the bottom).
  • It should bring up a list of thing accessing that folder. In my case it was only explorer.exe

edit2: Thought of something to use as an example. I opened my favorite text editor, typed “this is only a test” and did Save As, then Navigated to the Cache folder. I never clicked Save, but left the Save As dialog open. When I ran File Locksmith again, it showed my text editor and Explorer as the two things locking Cache.

edit3: File Locksmith appears to be live; that is, I left Locksmith open when I closed my text editor, and the entry disappeared in Locksmith.

Here’s hoping, my friend.

Lockhunter works for this as well.

Also, try rebooting into Safe Mode and deleting the contents of the Cache forlder.
