Can't Override Sound Files

For years I have been able to override sound files (like the GCD error fizzle sounds) through having set up a ‘Sound’ folder.

Example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft_retail_\Sound\Spells\Fizzle
File: FizzleHolyA.ogg

With logging in on patch 8.2, this override is no longer functioning. This is severely impacting my ability to enjoy playing the game as the sound(s) involved are obtrusive and distracting.

Same exact problem for me as well. I’ve tried changing the location of the “Sound” folder to every possible sub-folder within the default World of Warcraft installation path (besides the “Data” folder) & it still doesn’t remove the fizzle sounds.

I don’t understand why there isn’t at least a cvar option to disable these gcd/fizzle sounds. I can’t even listen to just the sound effects or just the ambience of the game without hearing that annoying fizzle sound.

Exact same problem, years of being able to remove the gcd fizzle, then 8.2 completely ruins it, forced to disable all sounds now, what a waste. What changed in 8.2? It completely disabled “No Error Sound!” and “Error Sounds Be Gone!”
@Blizzard, How can we replace these sound files?

Adding my name here, please fix this. Thanks!

Same here. This is driving me crazy!! Perhaps they renamed the file inside of the main data files and we just have to figure out what it is? Can anyone at Blizzard please give us a way to turn this sound off? Thanks!

This is not a bug. This is a side-effect of a change in the internal file structure. To try and thwart dataminers (pfft) they’ve changed how files are laid out in the CASC archives.

Instead of something like:

WoW/data/sounds/player/Player_Death.ogg

It’s now just a hashed file name like 12Z7hya01loyq.ogg dumped into one monolithic directory. ALL files are now given hashed names and dumped into the same directory to obscufate what the files and the content they’re related to actually are. Instead of human-readable file and directory names, the CASC files are just filled with jumbled letter salad, meaning unless/until someone figures out what EVERY. SINGLE. FILE. and the new names are, we’re pretty much screwed.

I’ve been afraid of this change since it was announced, because I’ve got several super-annoying sounds muted/changed, and a couple of errors corrected (Serpentbite uses gun noises despite being a crossbow. I didn’t beat the Mage Tower challenge the hard way just to have a crossbow that sounds like a GUN.) This is a sad change because it removes something people like us have used for years.

And now I am forced to mute Sounds completely…
Why did you do this blizzard? This it not a good way to keep your subscribers

All I can see with the CASC viewer are .DAT files. Content flags with 90000000 seem to be character speech (some are music) able to be played through audio, but I can’t find any of them that are spell effects. I have been going through them for hours and havent found a single playable spell effect. The sound ID for Holy Fizzle (which is the sound being played during button spam at least)

10846 confirmed ingame through /script playsound(10846)

If you can find the DAT file that contains this sound, I wonder if all you have to do is make a new file in the sounds folder that has the correct DAT file name? All just conjecture on my part, but havent even gotten up to getting the right file.

This won’t work either. With CASC what’s actually in those .dat files is unique to every install. So where your install has stored the Holy Fizzle sound will be different from where I have it stored.

I would love not to hear this sound on repeat every time im attacking. It’s pretty ridiculous. I cant hear anything but that and ruins all the time and effort the development team put into sound design. How has this been overlooked for 15 years?

Dear God, why Blizzard, why.

I’ve got this sick feeling that not only is nothing going to be done to restore the previous functionality, but they won’t even bother responding unless it’s just to tell us “Yeah, them’s the breaks.”

I would rather not play then hear that damn sound nonstop. Can we have it as an option like “error speech”? Please!?

FYI for my Blood Elf Hunter: I just found out that Arcane Torrent was the only spell throwing this sound out so I removed it from main rotation and I no longer get the Fizzle sound at all. Hope this helps someone. It won’t help everyone else with their sounds though.

Even if everyone’s files have different names, is there a way to find your own file and replace with a blank file? What directory can I start searching in?

Adding my name here as well, playing a Hunter will be unbearable with nerf gun/peashooter pops and very languid bow-nocking sounds.

This is so annoying!!!

This noise is so annoying I won’t play with the sound on. Please give us an option to mute it like the error speech.

I don’t want to hear my guns sounding like BB guns. Please allow us to change our sounds, also some UI addons are screwed up like Bagnon, it don’t work.

Bagnon works mostly now, you just have to go to keybinds and go to the addon section to bind the bags key to bagnon show inventory

I found a fix for the fizzle sounds! After searching the forums I found this post: “us(¬_¬)forums(¬_¬)blizzard(¬_¬)com/en/wow/t/custom-sound-files-not-working/207369/41”

What you will have to do is download this addon: “www(¬_¬)curseforge(¬_¬)com/wow/addons/mutesoundfile”
Go to: “wow(¬_¬)tools/files/#search=fizzle&page=1&sort=0&desc=asc” and copy the “FD ID” numbers and the “Filename” of the fizzleholya.ogg, fizzlefirea.ogg, fizzlenaturea.ogg, fizzlefrosta.ogg & fizzleshadowa.ogg into the addon.

Once those steps are done just press the “Mute this sound” button on the addon’s GUI and you’re good to go! You don’t even have to reload your ui. I’m sure this will also work with other sounds too! Hopefully this fix will stay working lol.

(Replace “(¬_¬)” with “.” for the links. Apparently I can’t post links)…
