I wanted to mount farm/try for the trashmaster cloak yet when I try to enter the dungeon even on heroic I just get put straight at the tussle tonks encounter where everything is level 80. Is there any way to get to the old/lower-level version or are us old content-doers just screwed for an entire season?

You may want to ask about this in Achievements or Quests. Tech support is for crashes and install issues.

At the moment, no, you cannot go to the older version. Since it is a current season dungeon, Heroic and Mythic will be scaled to level 80.
Assuming it is not a seasonal dungeon in Season 3, you should be able to go back to farming once Season 2 is over.
It isn’t just Mechagon, any seasonal dungeon will behave the same.
