Can't get my sound to work?

Can anyone help me with my sound in retail? I can’t hear anything and I’ve tried to go into my voice chat settings and repair the game itself and none of that seemed to work.

If you want to go full nuclear on it you can reinstall. Just save any addon settings.

A few things to try when this happens:

Assuming your sound is working in general (other apps/games)…

First, try ctrl-s…this turns the in game sounds on and off. Watch for the message in yellow text.

Next, in your sound settings, try setting the output device to something else, then back again.

Is this a PC or laptop? Does your sound go through HDMI to a monitor or TV? What operating system do you use?

Finally, try the Technical Support forum here: https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/c/support/technical-support

Make sure your sound output is set to where you want it to output. If it isnt make the change and restart the game (setting are not taking effect until restart at least for me since the patch)

if i reinstall will my ui still be there if i save it?

Interestingly enough, mine was! And I had to nuke every version of the game AND Bnet in order to reinstall, because something got majorly borked for me. I also went through Revo Uninstaller and deleted every single file folder for Bnet. Downloaded, logged in and bam, my UI was the UI I had saved in the editor.

The ONLY folder I saved and copied back over was the main Saved Variables folder. That was it. And I didn’t even copy that over until after I had made sure the game worked okay again.

ty for all the suggestions!

I tried to do the ctrl-s thing, didn’t work but good to know that’s even a thing. I tried setting my output to something else to seemingly no avail, and I’m on a PC on a monitor.

It’s just really weird ever since the pre-patch came out, my sound hasn’t been working. For every other game (Classic and OW) my sound works perfectly fine

Ok, hmm…Maybe it is your windows sound mixer? My friend and I both had a similar experience with it auto-adjusting our sound to zero on certain aps. While you have Warcraft open and in-game, go back to your desktop and in the tray right-click the sound icon, and choose the mixer one. It should open a window with everything running each with its own volume slider. Make sure that is cranked up.

Don’t overlook the obvious stuff.

Have you messed with your sound drivers?
Is your computer set to play through whatever audio you’re trying to use and not like a headset for speakers?
Did you make sure your audio is enabled
Did you make sure that your audio output is the same one that you’re wanting to use

Are you getting audio from other sources like youtube?

Are you using an hdmi for audio? Audio card or default from the motherboard?

figured out the problem! had to mess with my computer settings since apparently there was an update i needed. Ty for all the suggestions!

I have looked for so many fixes at this point I was about to reinstall the game thank you so much, you beautiful person you
Such a simple fix too smh

I can’t figure out for the life of me why Windows would do this (it just happened again to me two days ago), but I am so glad this helped you.
