I received Ashjra’kamas, Shroud of Resolve yesterday so currently rank 1, and completed a Vision of N’zoth to receive the Corrupting Core, however when I right-click the Core then left-click the cloak it says “That item cannot be modified”. I’ve tried with the cloak equipped and in my bag.
I also did another visions to see if maybe the core wasn’t good but I can’t turn in the quest due to duplicate reward (Corrupting Core).
edit: I did it on my level 50 warlock Goest, not this hunter I’m posting on.

Same issue here - I also could not upgrade my Benthic Armor is Naz
- Experienced on my alt, not this character.

This error is popping up in error reports for a lot of content:
- BfA Benthic gear
- Shadowlands Covenant campaign gear
- Shadowlands Korthia gear
- Upgradeable PvP gear
It seems to be a single issue that breaks upgradeable gear.

Not sure we’re allowed to mention specific GMs, otherwise I’d thank them publicly. Following their advice, this is what worked for me:
- Removed mog on cloak (not sure this was necessary, but wanted to keep things as simple as possible for the game engine)
- Deactivate all add-ons
- log out - restarted game.
- port into Chamber of Heart*
- follow usual procedure: right-click on Core in bag, then click on equipped cloak.
*GM recommended to try it in BfA zone, not SL. Went to Chamber because after following the other steps it still did not work in Boralus.

Just tried the steps Kunbo - didn’t work for me unfortunately.
I’m also having this problem with this hunter. Cloak is rank 1, item level 125, got the corrupted core, but cannot upgrade. “This item cannot be modified”.
I tried the fix mentioned above, removed the mog, disabled addons, reloged, moved to chamber of heart, but didn’t worked.
Dunno if its related tho, but I dont have Shadowlands on my acc.
I guess I just got lucky, no idea why.
There are some other (unrelated) wonky things going on concurrently. This usually happens after a major content update. Unfortunately - in any complex project involving multiple coders - sometimes updating one thing makes unexpected problems elsewhere. Then there are a lot of little unannounced patches over the following weeks.
We’re in that phase now - game updating nearly every day is a sign. Hopefully this problem with the cloak gets straightened out for everyone sooner rather than later.

I actually got the cloak to upgrade!
Just enter any Horrific Vision and just upgrade in there!
