Cannot roll Need on LFR piece even though I did not have it already

While doing LFR for its mog tint of items, I ran across a situation where I could not roll need. It was for plate shoulders from Eranog. The only thing I could think of is that I had the Normal mode shoulders already and it is bugged and flagged me as not being able to roll need even though I did not have the exact item.

I thought it wasn’t supposed to let you roll need on a downgrade. Because, well, you don’t need it.

The only thing mentioned in the blue post before about the new system is that you cannot roll need on the exact same item that is also the exact same ilvl.

If you can’t roll need on lower ilvl then how am I supposed to collect LFR mog at all? There will always likely be someone who it is an ilvl upgrade for. It makes running LFR for anyone who even puts a tiny bit of effort into their gear useless.

I think it’s implied that the system is intended to be smart and fair. Allowing someone with better gear to snipe someone’s upgrade would be neither.

Then it is yet another downgrade from personal loot. If you play any type of content, even WQing you will get gear higher ilvl than LFR. How should I go about getting the tints if items from LFR? Intentionally gimp my gear and wear something not as good? Would that even trick the system?

Wait a few more weeks and most people will have better gear and will not need to roll on it. Wait two years and solo it. That’s how we all do it.

People were saying this as soon as they announced that LFR would be group loot.

We were told that if you had the same item at a higher ilvl you would not be able to roll need. However, it appears that if you have a different item at a higher ilvl you can roll need.

I think they should come up with another mechanism for earning LFR transmog tints that doesn’t involve taking gear from players who need it.

if you hover your mouse over the “need” button it will tell you that you cant roll on it because you already have the same item at better ilvl

The way I do it is grind LFR every week after it comes out.

It’s neither smart nor fair to do this. It’s not smart, because LFR is already carried by people who over-gear the content, and a whole lot of them do it specifically for transmog. By locking those people out of appearances they want, you are upping the difficulty of LFR on the under-geared because transmog seekers won’t even bother running it. No one wants to do a wipefest LFR with everyone undergeared.

I’d even say it’s not fair, because most LFR gear lasts a matter of days before it’s replaced, while the appearance transmog seekers want lasts forever. Even now, world quest stuff drops up to 382 stuff, in a few more weeks all LFR gear will be an iLvl downgrade. A need roll against others for the gear is fair, both parties want the gear (for different reasons, but both valid). Locking out the player with normal gear from ever needing on a transmog piece from LFR is decidedly unfair.

Tanks and healers will still do LFR for the runes while they are expensive, until the runes become affordable. Then they will largely stop LFR too.

So, under these loot rules, the only people who will be running LFR in a few weeks are brand new, under-geared alts, who might wear an LFR piece for a couple days before replacing it with a WQ piece. And good luck to them downing bosses, because they will need it with no one around to carry the fight.

Edit: If the purpose from this is to stop loot trading to gear friends (I need something I don’t need for my friend), then make need rolls non-tradable.
