Cannot break 30 FPS [No longer SOLVED]

I’m running i7 12700k, 3080ti. I’m almost always at 90 frames minimum, or 120 average.

Lately I have been forced to reboot my machine in order to fix this issue, but as of today nothing is wanting to help make the game go above 30 fps on my machine.

I have disabled all addons, scan & repaired, turned off all resource heavy crap via Task Manager… nothing seems to make a difference.

Anyone else have a fix for this, or are having the same issues?

While there are some reports of stuttering and there are currently some lag issues on high population servers there hasn’t been anything matching your symptoms.

It sounds like something is artificially limiting your game client to 30 fps. Rebooting the machine to temporarily solve it would also lend to that being the case.

Typically Windows is kept up to date automatically but there are many occasions where you may need to manually run Windows Update. In those cases you can go into Windows Update under settings or control panel and check for updates. If you are unable to check through Windows update, check out the FAQ here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12373/windows-update-faq

We want to make sure we have all driver updates as well. GPU, Network, Audio, Motherboard/system. All are important. Check with your system maker for updates unless I include specific links below, then get your drivers from those links.

Let’s manually clear the Battlenet Desktop Application and all supporting data from the system. This will not remove existing game clients.

  1. Open file explorer/file manager (Right Click Windows Start)
  2. Navigate to the folder where the desktop application would normally be installed. Delete that folder if it exists (usually program files x86)
  3. Type the following into the address bar (not the search bar): %APPDATA% and press enter.
  4. Delete the Bnet and blizzard folders inside the appdata folder if they exist.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with %PROGRAMDATA% %LOCALAPPDATA% and %TEMP%
  6. Empty the recycle bin.
  7. Now reinstall the app to the C: Drive.

If you have any addon managers installed. They are fine programs but they have the tendency to prevent our troubleshooting steps from working. Please uninstall them and leave them off your system until we have solved the problem.

Once that is confirmed, we need to delete the temporary game files to attempt to eliminate any corrupt data that might be affecting the client or characters. Your game will rebuild them when you next login but this will remove all installed addons. Please do not reinstall any addons until we know the issue is resolved: https://battle.net/support/article/7549

Let’s reset the in game user options:

  1. Click the blue bnet icon on the bnet app.
  2. Choose settings, then game settings.
  3. Click the reset in game user options button under the correct game listing.
  4. Confirm the changes and close the window.

Try running your system in selective startup mode: https://battle.net/support/article/200483

Create a new administrator account: https://battle.net/support/article/34550

Once the account is created, shut down the computer, wait 60 seconds, restart, log into the new profile and try the app/client.

I’ve had a similar intermittent issue, but it’s not capped at 30. Ever since the pre-patch my FPS has been really bad most of the time even though I have a 3080 and 5800x3d. Maybe 1 out of 10 times it’s randomly been back to 165fps though. It sounds like this issue https://www.reddit.com/r/wow/comments/ye282w/huge_fps_drops_fix/ but those commands don’t do anything.

When the issue is occurring my GPU usage is at 100%, CPU is only 5% and my FPS is ~44 in a non-intensive area. The times I’ve seen it back up to 165 (my monitor is 165hz), GPU is at like 65% and CPU is at 25%.

After following all these steps, the issue is fixed, but when I tried to test things out with a Mix of the newly created CACHE, INTERFACE, WTF folders, and the original folders, both he Cache and the Interface seem to work fine, but when I remove the NEWLY created WTF folder and replace it with my original WTF folder, the low frames resume again.

This should lead us to believe something is wrong in the WTF folder.

Is there any way to diagnose and fix whatever is wrong in the WTF folder?

EDIT 1 (11/29): So I believe this has been solved.

After following your instructions, I made it to the point of renaming the CACHE, INTERFACE, and WTF folders. After amending them all with “OLD”, and starting the game, it ran fine.

So that leads one to believe that the issue is in one of those folders. So I sequentially reloaded my old CACHE folder; No issue. Then my Interface folder; no issue. Then when I did it to my WTF folder, the FPS drop came back.

Because it only consists of Saved Variables and Account folders, I excluded the Config.wtf file as it was created in the newer WTF folder, but I copied over the original 2 aforementioned folders. Game runs like it should now.

Thank you for the help!

I hope this helps others to fix any frames issues like I had. Super frustrating.

EDIT 2 (11/30)

Ok, so here we are again, back to the same issue AGAIN. I don’t know what is happening to the Config.wtf file, but after I fixed it per my last post, it was working fine. I played all night with my buddies, and I logged out for the night.

I go to log in today… SAME ISSUE AGAIN.

I redid ONLY replacing the original Config.wtf file, and the problem is fixed again.

I don’t know how or why it is getting “changed” in the middle of the night, or in between extended logins, but something is happening to this file…

Just FYI, this is now a daily fix requirement on my end alone. Not cool.

I’m having a similar issue.

I have been experiencing stuttering (even on the lowest settings) and I reset my UI (renamed cache, etc) a few days ago. This seemed to fix the issue but the stuttering has slowly creeped back.

I recently came across your post and tried just renaming the WTF folder and copying over only the Saved Variables and Account folders, and this has seemed to work.

I’m assuming this will again be a temporary fix. Pretty frustrating.
