I have no idea why Blizzard decided both to rug-pull their customers and reduce their income with a single bad decision

Some initially hypothesized that the decision to remove transfers was a lazy way to stop name changes (as if that needed fixing).

However ultimately Blizz offered this response below where they claim the transfer service was discontinued because it was a “money trap”. Obviously services and features being a money trap has never stopped them before, so it’s up to you to decide whether or not you actually believe their half-witted explanation:

We realized that the character transfers are kind of meaningless in 1.15.X, since the Era realms are all connected and transfers aren’t enabled for the other realms, so they were almost entirely a money trap. In light of that, we removed them from the shop (except for the free transfers off of hardcore of course).
