Can you play Affliction without Malefic Rapture?

Can you play Affliction without Malefic Rapture and be viable? Viable here meaning not painfully slow as you’re trying to clear delves?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t you just waiting for the dots to tick without Malefic Rapture?

As far as I know, you’re not supposed to use Malefic Rapture for AoE, even though it does trigger for every dot on every enemy. Spamming Seed does more damage. I learned this when I did the Mage Tower. I learned I was playing the spec all wrong.

On Single target, though, not using Rapture is like not pressing your filler.

Would Shadow Bolt be comparable damage if I used that instead?

It really won’t. Try it and just feel the dps loss.

No. Rapture is your major damage dealer

Spamming seed isn’t the way to do it. Before it was but they nerfed seed to keep rapture. Seed is only to spread corruption.

No, rapture takes the damage of your dots and makes them burst.

You only shadow bolt with nightfall procs. Personally, I don’t take shadow bolts, if I play affliction I rather use drain soul.

Short answer:

Yes you CAN play affliction without Malefic rapture, but you’ll be going a lot slower in most cases.

This was correct in Dragonflight. In TWW for Affliction, Seed is only used to spread Corruption.

TBH while I don’t hate Rupture being the AoE spender, really wish they’d take the shard cost off Seed if it’s the intent, or make it justify it’s shard cost and let it apply Agony or something.

You can play without malefic rapture in PvP I think. There is a build around Shadowbolt. You can also play a subpar build for fun in BGs to just DoT people and pad damage.

Nothing is going to stop you from not using it I wouldn’t advise not using it but its a free country

You still need to cast Rupture since the Soul Harvester gameplay loop basically revolves around buffing Rupture and Nightfall using Nightfall procs to trigger Crescendo (Free and instant Rupture).

Also it’s “rapture,” not “rupture,” to the people who call it that. I had to learn that when making a macro lol.

Yup, I love soul harvester since the whole gameplay is looped around nightfall procs and rupture.

Drain soul, being my preferred filler spell, with NF procs and getting succulent souls made the gameplay loot fun for me.

I got headache reading this. Who designs these classes, my god. :dracthyr_uwahh_animated:

It makes a lot more sense when you actually play it.

It’s more or less just the regular Affliction gameplay loop (maintain dots, use filler, use rupture to spend shards) but FASTER since you’re now getting way more Nightfall triggers (since you get 25% extra Haste to corruption + Haunt generates a Nightfall proc), which means you’re getting more Tormented Crescendo procs (talent which gives a chance for a free + instant rupture when you use SB/DS on a target with all three dots on it) and also Soul Rot gives 3 shards which gives Affliction a tool to actually reload its shards without needing to snipe stuff.

Very fun, sadly it’s pretty undertuned compared to Hellcaller which just giga-buffs Corruption and otherwise has the same problem of having little shard generation outside generating free Rupture procs via Crescendo and sniping adds.

This is very wrong, they changed it now MR is what you use in AOE and you only use one seed to get AOE corruption out

Maybe not as free as it used to be but freer than vast majority. Nice ‘joke’ though. lol
