Can you help me understand Underpin ? Mechanics?

The underpin ?? is making me feel crazy because things feel completely random, I’ve gotten him down to about 35% hp, so I know I can do this but I feel like everytime I lose its out of my control. Heres what I don’t understand:

Why do the bombs on the ground sometimes just not work? Like ill click the interact button 5 times and they just wont kick?

Sometimes when I kick the bomb it goes 5 feet, sometimes it goes 10k miles?

I try the trick to stay near the wall so the summoned cronies all stay in a nice line and near each other, but it seems like its all luck? Like sometimes they just spawn in a different zipcode even if I’m near the wall?

Why does his shield just randomly not activate? I know that when the blue bar fills up his shield is ready to use, and I know that it triggers based on damage, so I’ll clear the field, and make sure my CDs are ready to break the shield. But then randomly, he will decide he isn’t going to cast his shield until he fills the field back up with cronies? even though its been off CD for like 2 minutes?

Why do the mechs sometimes take 2 bombs? sometimes 3? sometimes 4? again it just feels random?

Sometimes it feels like his shield is just straight up bugged? like he will cast it. I will DPS. the shield will no longer show on his health bar, like I’ve done the damage requirement and he gives me the middle finger and heals anyways?

Make sure you’re facing the bomb. The arrow can be pointing the direction you want, but if your character model is not angled correctly facing the bomb, it won’t work.

That’s the terrain of the arena. The color difference coincides with the elevation. I believe lighter is higher and darker is lower. So if you kick it over a valley, it will go farther. If you kick it into a hill, it will stop.

It’s where the boss is, not you. So you need the boss to stay close to the wall and completely on one side of the adds that are dead.

The only thing I read about that was you have to get him to a certain % (I think it was like 81.7% or something arbitrary like that) before the first shield will activate even if he has full energy. All others after that first shield should be pretty quick upon full energy though.

It could be where you’re kicking the bombs. If you kick it at the middle mob, theoretically it should do damage to all 5. But if it hits the 2nd mob, it might not reach to the 5th mob for example.

I didn’t experience that.

How many times have you tried?

Im at about 20 attempts on my blood dk and less than 5 on my other classes, monk, druid, warrior and paladin

Rookie numbers, you got time to grow and get that muscle memory nice and tight.

20 is nothing, keep at it, you got this!

Thank you for these replies, I do have the boss near the wall and he still summons them everywhere, and im still having issues with him randomly not activating his shield even after the 1st one, until he calls in goons randomly

It can take a different amount of bombs to destroy the mechs depending on role. I think tanks only need 2, other roles need 3.

And yeah 20 pulls is nothing. I think this and Zek’vir took me 70-80 pulls each. It’s more about consistency and muscle memory, so try to make sure you’re doing it the exact same way every time.

Could be a cast sequence thing. If he’s already in a sequence of bombs>minions>shield it’s possible the shield won’t prio over the other ones. I dunno though I never really had that happen.

Boss body blocks it, gotta try to aim your camera different, its finnicky and annoying.

Ground height differences. The ground isn’t 100% flat it seems, and doesn’t go as far uphill.

They won’t spawn on top of a dead crony corpse, you need to rotate around the room to give enough room for the fresh batch of cronies to come in near you.

I believe its also based on his HP %.

For DPS its always 3 bombs, you can manage to splash damage multiple at a time if you hit a more central crony to damage the ones beside them as well. Tanks only have to hit them with 2 bombs when they do it. It will never take 4 bombs for one.

Spec tank, google or youtube how to do it as a tank

if you made it to 35%, or even just consistently able to break underpin shield 3 times, then you are doing good enough

  1. Improve your survivability to withstand attacks from 2-3 surviving cronies
  2. improve your survivability to bounce back from near death situations

The trick is that this challenge is completely bugged in several aspects.

After every attempt exit and re enter.

I wasted a hundred attempts before I accepted this advice and reset it after every attempt.

It then took three tries.

I just started working on ?? Already missing Zekvir and mage tower. The interact key bind, while helpful, still feels clumsy to use.

Currently having issues with kicking bombs too. which then of course results in alive adds, which causes problems.

Thank you for the hint to aim bombs at middle one. Although I still feel like one bomb only hits half the adds.

I had to step away in pure annoyance of the kick bomb mechanic.

I only did it the one time but I would recommend trying to actually click on the bombs.

As for the adds being summoned, it felt like avoiding fighting near oil naturally pushed me far enough away where the adds had space to spawn. I think the damage of the bombs will vary depending on how accurately you hit the mobs.

As for the shield I have no idea.

I wouldn’t. The boss hitbox is going to screw you up more than the interact key.

You’ve REALLY gotta be in control of the positioning for everything. Cronies can be killed by cleave damage if bombs are in dangerous spots but that’s the start of a bad situation.

Hang out near an empty wall, and be there a while so Brann comes closer too in case the boss leaps on him.

Stand near a bomb before adds come out and be ready to kick one immediately. Try to kill adds with the bombs that dropped before they showed up, but in a crunch you can clear an area and use the next batch.

Keep the boss near the current adds if he’s gonna shield, you DO NOT want oil interfering with the next set of bombs/adds.

If there’s a gap in the previous adds, or oil in a bad spot, run far away to bait the next set, having them split up is very bad.

If the boss is low and adds are getting out of control, ignore them and burn burn burn.

You should never put the boss near the wall. Split the room into 4 sections in your brain. Be close to the middle of the room on the short length, and slightly closer to halfway up your quadrant towards the middle. The bombs will 100% spawn in a straight line side by side doing this. Doing this lets you split the adds into 2x groups so you only need 3x bombs to hit the middle ad of each group making them die super fast. Then you move to the next quadrant once ads are dead and nuke boss, rinse and repeat.

If you think of the arena like a hockey rink, premium positioning as that sweet spot where the top of the faceoff circle, meets the point and the high slot.
