Would really like this answered as well, have an entire guild doing nonstop arch and no mention of this thing.

Original Cata I knew of NO one getting either staff or sword… but my friend got sword while leveling in Twilight Highlands
yes it’s possible, multiple people with it on the mage discord, guildy also already has zinrok too
It is possible, they seem to operate similar to Legion legendaries. You get 1-3 rares relatively quickly and then it’s curtains. If you don’t pop Staff or Sword in your first ~60, assume you’re pushing 100, 200, 300+ There are warriors in the Discord with 400+ troll finds.
Every archeology item has been found at one point or another besides Pterrordax Hatchling.
I’m probably going to bank 200 fragments in all and wait for next week, let the complaints bubble up a bit more and see if there’s an obvious flaw to fix… maybe at the very least working backluck protection.
Guild full of sweaties who have been doing this for 3 days and not one of us has it. Been at this since 7am and I don’t have a single rare of ANY kind to show for it.
If this design is intentional, my God someone is a sadist…

I have 200+ troll solves and 180+dwarven solves and yet no Zinrokh or staff, but I know they are obtainable since guildy alrdy got Zinrokh…
Like ppl mentioned before, they should implement some “build-up” mechanic that the probability of epic proccing should increase for every non-epic solve for each race, instead of leaving it with pure rng with ~0.01% chance.

we’ve been doing a lot of digging, so far we have 3 items in total, i have like 500 or so solves in total and don’t have anything yet
i’m very surprised such a hardcore mechanic was left in the game tbh

if your guild has 3 items (staff/Zinrokh) then you guys are considered super lucky. My guild (one of my toons) has ~80 active players and we have 1 so far.

Not sure if Pservers have these item proc chance increased (it was so much faster to get Zin/staff on most Pservers) or the original proc chance from Bliz’s official server is just what we are seeing right now in Classic… It seems the expected number of troll/dwarf solves to get these 2 weapons is somewhere between 600 to 1000.
Many frens and guildies have hired agents to dig, which is fair if the expected time you spend elsewhere can earn more money than how much pay the agent, given how hard it is to solve Zin/Staff.
238 solves… been at this since 7am this morning. Nothing to show for it. Like, is this expected? I mean, that isn’t even a remotely reasonable expectation of a player to dump that kinda time into something that offers nothing in the way of progression. WAY more options out there that respect a players time more than this crap. Good night…

Another sub 50 victor. Sounds like you reroll on an alt if you don’t hit it quickly. Do you mind mentioning if you’ve gotten all of the dwarf common artifacts? Just for science.
I use an addon called Minimal Archaeology which tracks solves (among other things), this is what it looks like.

A strat I hear is that you don’t solve any of the ones you want while leveling and should rather save them for when you’re 450. I did this with my dwarven solves though I did ~3 solves to get to 450 from dwarven while holding 200 frags. I spammed a lot of the Night Elf ones so the chances of me getting the trinket for Arcane is pretty low I believe.

The expected number of solves is like 1000. That being said, it is still possible to proc the staff on the first solve, it just extremely unlike.
Suppose the probability of getting the staff on any solve is 0.1 % and assume uniform distribution. E{X} would be 1 / 0.001 = 1000; And the probability of you getting the staff in 1000 solves, using Bernoulli distribution:
P(X) = C(N, R) * P^R * (1-P)^(N-R) = C(1000, 1) * 0.001 * (1-0.001)^999 + C(1000, 2) * 0.001^2 *(1-0.001)^998 + C(1000,3) * 0.001^3 * (1-0.001)^997 … = 0.63
So yea, if the probability of epic weapons proccing is uniformly 0.001, then the chance of us getting any of them in 1000 respective solves in that race, is around 63%.

I guess a question to ask is… what person would consider that a reasonable expectation or usage of one’s time in a game that has countless things to do and this is one item in a pool of 10s of thousands?
Nobody should have looked at this and said: “great idea! put it in prod!”. Def not respecting a players time investment.
