I started a Dwarf Warrior and the name I received after clicking ‘Randomize’ was Aness. If I choose to use that name and someone reports me, will I have to change the name? I’m assuming the built-in random name generator follows the naming conventions.
if enough people report your name it can get an automated forcechange, but it it doesn’t violate the ToS you can write in a ticket and have it revoked to keep the name
Yes. There has been a number of questionable randomly generated names. Just don’t choose them when they come up.
Edited to be more specific: The built-in random name generator is a completely separate thing and does not enforce the naming conventions.
Teehee that sounds naughty!
I mean you’d have to get alot of reports to have to change the name. I wouldn’t worry about it.
“Can you be reported for a randomly generated name?”
Of course you can! Despite what you read about “AI”, computers have no intelligence. Zero. Nada. nothing. Computers cannot speak English, or understand English…much less know what sets of letters spell out words that “sound” offensive.
Any action computers perform is planned and entered into the computer by programmers. I am sure that randomly-generated names are run through the same “offensive checker” filter that the game and forum use. But it is pathetically easy for real humans to get around that filter and say offensive things.
It would take an infinite amount of time for a human to figure out every possible combination of letters that spells (or sounds like) an offensive word, and type that list into the computer program.
The “naming conventions”? Those are written by humans, for humans. It is not possible to write a computer program that enforces those.
I’m well aware of that; however, this is a fairly easy test case. If you go through enough randomized names, you’ll start to spot the patterns (prefixes + suffixes) that are used for each race. There are only so many of each, so it’s certainly manageable to filter out the “bad” ones after the randomization is completed.
For Dwarves:
‘A’ is a prefix.
‘ness’ is a suffix.
So it stands to reason that ‘Aness’ will eventually come up. If they didn’t want people choosing that, then they should filter it out after the randomization occurs and essentially just re-roll the prefix, suffix, or both.
Yes, you can be reported, and yes, you can be actioned.
However, I’m pretty sure Blizzard can tell if it was randomly generated, so if you open a ticket, you can probably have the action part removed from your account, but you’d still be forced to change the name.
That said, one time I made a goblin hunter, and the random name generator made a name that was pronounced like a racial slur, so
Its all your fault jk. Like blizzard has any ounce of accountability to make a randomizer that follows their rules.
How the random name generator works is there are a certain number of syllables that are programmed to come up frequently in names. There is one that used to come up as the first four letters of female troll names quite frequently, a word of four letters that commonly has the meaning “adult media”.
Yeah, they did. They recently changed it and that 4 letter combination never comes up anymore.
Anyway, if you want to choose a suggestive randomly-generated name, just be sure you have a second choice handy for when someone reports you and you get your free name change.
The random generator doesn’t really take into account “sound alike” type stuff.
So if real random, stuff like that could come up.
Yes, you should read/say it out loud and so forth.
You actually can. The name generator is a randomized tool that puts predefined parts of a name together, however it does not check those versus the policies and how we interpret the names.
