Was contemplating posting this in technical support, but I’m not really asking for support. With the recent-ish battle between AMD and Intel, I’ve been looking into a new build which includes the i9-9980 with 18 freaking cores. Question is, would WoW make use of them all and/or other Blizzard games?
Otherwise I’ll just go for the standard 8-core CPU.
Cheers!
What resolution are you playing at ?
You can check this excellent video with 11 Intel/AMD CPUs being benchmarked with a RTX 2080 at 1080p, 1440p and 4k resolutions. Uldir raid and outside world tested as well. It is really complete.

sniff sniff I smell a troll.
Awesome link, thanks for that!
If you have the money to get that CPU, I would. I would take ANY Intel CPU over a AMD anyday.
WoW is not going to be around forever, and other games do make use of those cores. Both options you mentioned are GREAT CPU’s.
Wish I could upgrade from my i7-2600K, but it still plays WoW at graphics level 8 with over 60fps, so im still good for now.

My wife and I recently bought the i7 9770k in December so my research is fairly current. For gaming in general, the meagre performance bump over the i7 (about 2%) does not justify the expense. Your money would be better spent on a faster GPU, faster RAM, a better motherboard, or even an NVMe SSD.
If you play games and do CPU-intensive work (like video rendering) the i9 might be justifiable, but AMD’s top Threadripper has far better workstation performance (but worse gaming performance) than the i9.
