Have some broke friends who I want to play with but can’t because they cap at 20.
Maybe change the cap to be the last xpac cap, so 60. FF14 gives a lot more in their free to play option so have WoW do that too.

I can support that. No reason to not at least let classic go ftp
$15 has always been a solid quality control filter of the playerbase
Maybe at one point but as we bleed players that $15 just keeps out new blood and creates an environment where we’re left with the worst of the worst.
eh you might be right about that now actually. i don’t think it would be a bad idea but i doubt it’ll ever happen still
FYI- EverQuest’s current monetization model is that new expansions cost money but the overhauled (Retail) world is otherwise free to play. Progression servers (Classic-like) require a subscription.
Turns out people dislike world overhauls in MMOs practically universally, and people are willing to pay to see the historic game state–paying for “the experience”. The annoy-you-until-you-pay model has really taken off.
Yes and no. Every expansion sells like gangbusters. Then they sub. Some quit and stay subbed and some quit and unsub.
Between that and the token and the store? It’s obviously been enough to keep us going.
Im sure there are at least a few hundred thousand to millions a month reasons for it not to go free to play. There are no alternate monetization systems in place currently for them to make up that money…so they won’t do it.
Classic and retail share a subscription buddy one of them is already free to play, which one you choose is up to you lol
I’m fine with it,
But it won’t help to get your friends to jump on the bus.
Some people just don’t want to pay.
This is a very confusing argument based on semantics. Neither classic or retail is free to play because they both require a shared $15 sub to access. Making classic free to play, as you suggested, means Blizz would lose all of the sub revenue from classic only players.
Just the Topic title made me just want to go: umm, no
Doesn’t seem right for some reason.
Yes and no. Although you can technically play on retail servers (not the TLPs) without a sub, you don’t have access to the higher tier mercs and, more importantly, you will be missing a ton of AAs (greatly limiting player power and what you can do), and the best items won’t be useable. You will also be limited to rank I for your spells, II and III require a sub.
Free EQ works fine until level 85 -100 maybe…you will struggle beyond that, and certainly not able to do end-game content.
But how to control account selling and stuff what are the limitations on starter accounts regarding instances or currency collection? I remember a 20gold cap but I dont remember the details. Allowing people to play free up to 60 would spike account selling botting farming and griefing since you just buy a cheap account off some site. Kinda like gacha games and rerolling. Not really for it

Probably a good idea. Let them play more and maybe they get hooked.
To 20 is so fast its not really getting to know your character or the game much.
But I think the point is the trial is to get your friends to become paying customers.
not sure blizzard is going to allow anyone to play to 60 indefinitely for free.

unless its changed lately, ESO also lets you play up to the last expansion free, I believe. If you want current you have to buy it.
They give some perks if you sub, such as free Crowns to spend every month.
Ive bought a TON of player houses just collecting those crowns each month, lol
I appreciate the extra depth and specificity. Can you explain what that means in WoW terms though? E.g, if it were WoW, Retail would really only playable up to level 55-60, except you stop getting talents and skill ranks at level 40?
In spirit, the point was that an even older MMO doesn’t provide Classic as F2P, but offers a little more lenient (albeit incomplete) F2P Retail experience.
IDK Seems like a lot of Arsehats can afford that 15$
Personally i donʻt see a problem with allowing FTP for all legacy content.
have WoW do that too.
Um yeah, FTP is not a good model for a game, especially when the monitization can get worse than currently is.
$15 has always been a solid quality control filter of the playerbase
Has been $15 since day one. If the price was adjusted to keep with inflation, we’d be paying $25 a month by now.
If you’re willing, 6 and 12 month subscription is even cheaper at $13 a month plus you get some freebies. Can’t “pause” subscription though so if you needed a long break, those unused time will go to waste.
ESO also lets you play up to the last expansion free, I believe.
So does GW2. WoW is severely lacking with their trial but given how horrible the new play experience is I am more or less in the don’t care until they improve that area of the game.
