I don’t think Linux support was ever promised? Maybe they tried and it just proved to be more unstable than it was worth.
…Which is pretty in-line with a lot of Linux experiences, really.
I wouldn’t mind a Linux version: I think Linux is real fun to mess with and the freedom you’re afforded is great (if dangerous) but Linux users are such a tiny part of the computer userbase (most don’t even know what Linux is) that there’s such little reason to devote time and resources making and updating such a version.
Also can’t say I approve of the paranoia you have about Microsoft: I’m sure they take some data but hey, if they want to know I have sheep pictures that’s on them!
I’m of two minds on this as a previous WINEdev for a different game (Grand Fantasia).
ActiBliz largely is doing a nice gesture in continuing support MacOS as it is an immense effort/support to keep to game going on the platform in comparison to the returns they would get in Windows. Yet even now i can boot up an older Mac Air I have and smack some mobs in WOTLK.
After supporting Linux myself for many years and it being my primary driver for 6 years of my life, I can assure you being on the ‘other’ end of Linux support is sucky at best. Atleast for me it was something I did out of pure passion for free. It is not something that will be worth the effort of supporting officially ever. Unless Red Hat or another commercial version gets a huge market uptake.
If you need to chmod 777 for the executable to work something is very wrong. You should never need to give everyone rwx if you’re configuring your system properly.
its not being a paranoid tin foil hattist when Microsoft themselves openly admit to actually spying and selling your data. You being unaware of these facts doesn’t make them untrue, look at Microsoft Windows privacy statement and read your eula.
Some people get way too wrapped up in computer platform choice.
Personally I use what I find preferable for the task at hand. A Mac laptop is what I use to earn my paycheck while gaming and playing with things like AI image generators and 3D rendering happens on a custom built tower running Windows and casual away from the desk use has been assigned to a laptop dual booting Windows and Linux. They all have a place.
I work as a mobile app developer, and you can’t write iOS apps on Windows or Linux, which is a problem when the target market for company I work for is the US, which has over 50% of mobile marketshare going to iOS.
You can. You’re more then allowed to use a mac to work but the industry forcus on PC for the right reasons, and that is avoid headache and needing to build wrappings.
Linux marketshare is growing pretty rapidly. It is usually marked as unknown because it doesn’t choose to blast what it’s users are doing all over the Internet. Simply ignoring desktop Linux going forward is a fools errand. When Mac users got wow, Mac OS was at like 4-5% and Linux is up to 7%.
