I was really excited to dust off a bunch of old mounts whenever Skyriding came around, only to find that mounts with special particle effects like Ashes of Al’ar or the Dark Phoenix don’t work right with Skyriding, even with all the Skyriding particles turned off… This seems like a huge oversight. A lot of people farmed Ashes of Al’ar because the mount looked really cool, leaving a trail of fire and ethereal ribbons behind you as you fly. It caught the eyes of everyone around for years and, I’d argue, still does to this day. It looks REALLY weird flying on a fire phoenix with no ribbon trail.
Contrails for myself would be neat. I think it would need a limiter if others could see it, maybe only produced during Whirling Surge. Related: I want a NyanCat/rainbow effect.
(Partial effects can cause a fairly large performance drop. If you don’t remember or weren’t there, WOD had some serious performance issues outside the Horde garrison location because of semi-transparent partial effects. 60fps to 12fps on then-modern hardware.)
Wait, you can turn off the obnoxious skyriding particals?
Yes, it’s in the setting under “Mounts”

Ironically ashes without trails during sky riding is the only reason I use it now
