If you’re going to add another feature that no one asked for (gender options), can we at least get one that people want? I’m referring to being able to give our characters a surname or a name separated with an apostrophe or hyphen without the use of an RP addon. Surely, such a thing shouldn’t be too difficult to add at this point.

I’m certain an RP feature that’s present in other MMOs both old and new has been requested for this game a hell of a lot more often than the ability to choose what NPCs call you, but do be facetious.

I’ve actually seen people want a last name option! 
Could open up the floor for more characters to have names that they want.

It’s an option that gets requested every couple of months, but Blizz has remained silent about it. No time for that when there’s aptly timed corporate pandering to do.

There are far more things the majority want in this game than extra names.
RPers aren’t exactly a priority.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen Blizzard add things for RPs sake.
Surnames largely wouldnt be an RP thing. It’d be a way to let people choose the names they actually want to use, period, because the combinations having 2 names unlocks would be HUGE. Taken names are a constant complaint in WoW. It’s a solution to that without going full “hidden code” awkwardness.

Listen, Im not no-one and Ive asked for it.
Id love to have second names for my toons. Some of my other games have it as an option, you can even make 3 parters.
I wish to make a toon called Boaty McBoatface. Its time has come!

I’d love this so much. I really wish the Total RP addon was just integrated into the game. It would give RPers an insane amount of customization baked into the game, and those people who don’t want to use it could just ignore it.

Character names are unique on the server. It would be a pretty big engineering issue to jam this into the game at this time.
Basically, the entirety of the Chat functionality would need to be rewritten, at a minimum. Macros utilizing “@playerName” conditions would need to be rewritten to accept a surname. AddOns can easily store these surnames because they’re not doing anything that the basic API doesn’t allow. (Read: they aren’t hacked clients).
The suggestion is innocent enough, but it’s not a simple addition to the game.
A bruteforce solution is to transition to GUIDs, but for the same reason we have DNS servers resolving Google.com we don’t want to memorize our friend’s GUID/code.

But yes, we do need the option for one space, apostrophe or hyphen in names.
Except people have asked for both.

The xfaction communication elixir was added specifically due to RPers requesting after Blizzard broke an addon.
This is something that has been requested for years.
