I would like to make it clear that this thread is not intended to be a discussion about the future of Classic amongst the community, but instead simply a request for an up to date official statement.
As of now, the community discourse when it comes to any debate about the future of Classic has entirely devolved into useless banter.
The last time that I know of that this was touched on was by Omar Gonzales and Brian Birmingham when being interviewed by, EsfandTV, StaysafeTV and TipsOutBaby during ClassiCast #32 where it was seemingly made clear that the three main contenders discussed by the community thus far for the future were all on the table pending community feedback, those being:
No Changes
As absolutely few as possible changes to Classic in an attempt to keep as authentic of an experience as possible indefinitely. Vanilla forever.
Expansion Packs
Progressing forward through the history of World of Warcraft one expansion at a time.
Classic+
This subject is hairy at the moment but it boils down to “Old content but with changes and/or new content crafted for it”.
Normally I would simply wait and see how things play out and continue to engage with the community here, but as it stands now all discussion immediately spirals into people either getting up at arms, just spouting off “No Changes” as if it is a rich and compelling argument on its own OR only linking to any given Blizzard statement that happens to support their own idea of what the future of Classic should be and this is not germane to any amount of healthy discussion.
You can’t get feedback from the community if the community has conflicting information and has to grasp at straws to even make an argument for their case.
I would very much like a more definitive answer about what lengths Blizzard is willing to go to in order to satisfy the community and anything that can be shared about what they are discussing internally so that we as a community can have a strong platform from which to formulate our discussion about what should or should not/could or could not be considered for the future of Classic WoW…
Until this is made clear, no amount of discussion will yield any useful results and any discussion that is to be had will be a misrepresentation of what the community as a whole is most interested in.
They answered this already, with a non-answer. Cant remember where it was, but the question was something like what happens after phase 6, and their answer was something like, we arent looking at that yet, right now we’re concerned with getting classic out with expected blizzard quality.
So basically, they’re keeping all their options open.
If you click the link to ClassiCast #32, it starts at a timestamp where they talk about all these things. It’s at least a little bit more than a non-answer, but it conflicts with other earlier statements made by Blizzard officials so ultimately it helps nothing.
The most hilarious part is the games only been out for a couple weeks and it’s already starting to be stagnant and people are actually inquiring about the future and it’s not even phase 2 yet XD
I don’t its a matter of it already being stagnant… at least not for most people. I still have two Alts I want to level for the purposes of PvP, but I DO like to engage with the community and we can all kinda be turds about it sometimes, especially when we’re arguing blind…
I love how passionate everyone is about Classic, but it’d be a whole lot better if we weren’t all just taking shots in the dark based on our own bias and hopes for for the future.
To me the whole classic experience is more about character investment than anything else. With no answers on how things are going to progress it has me hesitant to invest as much time into it as I would like to honestly.
I just want to know that whatever they decide to do (fairly obvious we are getting other expansions) that the character(s) I spend all this time working on are the ones I’ll be progressing through anything to come with.
If it’s a restart clean every time an expansion is released then meh, would kind of be useful to know ahead of time. Knowing for certain that my character is going to be what I’ll be using throughout this entire experience of past expansions would remove a lot of uncertainty about what the future holds in relation to how much time I want to invest into the game at this point.
Yeah, that’s quite obviously not what I’m referencing. The current, most debated topic outside of exploits is what the future beyond Phase 6 is going to be… Let’s not pretend that I’m the only person thinking about it cause that would be silly. Practically every person I’ve engaged on these forums since before Classic even launched was talking about post Phase 6 content and what that might mean.
It says an aweful lot about the stability of this game and forum if people are already talking about phase 6 when it’s not even in phase 2. You’re already looking well past the realm of what classic will give into the future but this entire time you’re yearning for it to be… classic.
What it says is that people have a passion for what World of Warcraft USED to be and have a loathing of what it has become. What it says is that to most people, Classic is just a stepping stone between us and a better future than we got last time all this content was relevant.
Honestly… that’d be pretty hilarious even if ultimately disappointing.
What is says that despite classic literally being out right now, you’re still wanting more. The problem is you’re wanting more immediately. That isn’t passion for what it used to be or a loathing of what it became.
you’re literally 15 years ago at the end of vanilla when it became stagnant and you’re crying for more. You’re looking for the BC equivelent and you’re looking for the changes that progressed wow into the future and into what it is and Classic hasn’t even been out for 3 weeks.
Classic is Vanilla. Thats all. You’re not content with it and it just came out.
This, yeah. It was basically completely and intentionally vague, with the statement that bc servers are possible and the future of classic depends on classic’s success.
They can only give a non-committal answer now because they are waiting for information that will only be available 6-12 months after the launch and we are not there yet. Once they knew what the playerbase numbers are like a few months later, then they can make the decision.
As contradicting as this is going to sound… some people aren’t playing classic for classic. They’re playing to prepare for BC, for example. Better off playing casually and earning some gold in prep for the possible BC launch, rather than BC launching and you’re totally unprepared.
Community feedback means classics success and actual data analyzed over time. We all can have a woody for the game and but if the numbers aren’t there (The actual numbers that blizzard has, not the forums vague intrepretation of stat padded servers and artificial forced queue times to make share holders happy because “oh servers full! looks like it’s a winner!”) But actual real numbers, then the numbers aren’t there. And it’ll just be what it is. You can’t base the future off a couple weeks of a rush of players without actually letting it settle. 6 months down the road we all know it’ll level out and lower and find a state of normal and then they’ll analyze it and determine where it will go.
They’re playing classic for classic. We’re playing classic for classic. There isn’t a single soul that’s playing classic for BC, or Wrath, or anything else. You’re just using that as an excuse. Thats the whole reason why we’re all here is because people wanted the original game back in one way shape and form and the only reason why Blizzard gave it was because it’s easy money for them.
