I’ve got so many mog sets I will consider forever incomplete as the last piece is an item that just says “world drop” - no boss of the raid drops it. And “world drop” is super vague, and I am not gonna go randomly waste my time trying to obtain it.

Wouldnt WoWHead be useful for that? Most things have a “Dropped From” list.

Pretty sure the vendor for world drops is the AH. Most I can think of are BoEs. I sell a bunch of mog items. 
If it is a tier set from the last couple expansion it may be that you need to get another item of the right season/difficulty level and take to the that expansions catalyst. Once a season is over they no longer require charges to change over items, just the right class to use it.
This is how you get several set items that don’t seem to drop anywhere.
The issue, 1 of the drops the cheapest i can find on AH is 100k. For a belt. Yeah, no thank you.
OR just add the items to a boss on the raid they are for… Whenever I see “world drop” on a set piece, I just complete the rest and stop bothering.
Even AH is far too confusing when you need the same BoE/world drop item for LFR/Normal/Heroic/Mythic - SAME WORLD DROP at 4 different levels for 4 different appearances
And in old raids it’s worse, as the world drops aren’t even BoE, they are just “world drop”

I think tmogs should be able to be farmed fully in the raids they are for… not having to buy a random piece because for some reason the matching appearance was never in the raid it’s for.
and comments there tend to be helpful. I add a lot for mog fans like myself on how to complete sets (mostly legion sets at this point but gonna branch out more when I have time and there are less limited events going on all at once)
You most likely already know this, but just in case :
Some xpacs, the raid or tier lookalike ‘world drops’ that are BOE drop from raid trash. It’s still too rare of a drop chance, but at least that narrows it down some and you’ll end up getting quite a few, depending on what else you are farming.
I’m not sure how many xpacs that is true of, but in Legion pretty much all the lookalike tier that says “world drop” is from raid trash or world bosses. A few are from Nether Disruptor bosses, which is even harder - all are rare - and def agreed it can be extremely frustrating. There is also a small chance of getting them from Relinquished gear sold on the Vindicaar for Veiled Argunite, so I do the weeklies for that and buy those as well.
My biggest frustration is trying to get the mogs that only drop from Legion Invasion bosses and the ‘random chest only’ Argus world sets. I’m still 2 pieces from completeing Felslinger set from Antoran Wastes, despite off and on farming for literally years. Not to mention First Satyr’s Spaulders T_T
