Blizzard’s API I believe is the data that allows many addons and other things to function. This includes the official WoW armory, the website, the addon and site “Raider IO”. And other logging websites. (I am not an ADDON author so this may not be 100% correct).
Why is this important for World of Warcraft Classic?
This is my character’s profile. You’re allowed to see many things on there that you wouldn’t have been able to see during Vanilla. One of the largest ones were talents. During Vanilla, unless you used specific spells, it wasn’t easy to know exactly how your talents were set up.
You can also see my raiding history. Which was not the case during Vanilla.
Another use of the WoWAPI, would be Warcraftlogs. Warcraft logs collects raid logs. This is fairly common amongst raiding guilds. But warcraft logs began in 2013 according to their website. Logging and collecting DPS numbers on a large scale wasn’t around in Vanilla to my knowledge.
So I’m curious, what is everyone’s opinion about the openness of the API? Do you feel that should there be an armory, it should allow you to view talents? Track boss kills? Among other things?
Eh… the only thing I’d use the Armory for is importing my characters into WoW Model Viewer, assuming of course WMV will support Classic at any point in its development.
I can see how the Armory can be abused easily by elitist jerks, though… so no. Let’s not enable the Armory for Classic.
as “item level” is fairly static and wont be changing as it does so highly and so often as it has in retail over the last few years we wont be seeing those ridiculous things really going through, and without the M+ and heroics “rankings” the only thing to base these scores on will be your raiding history so its not going to work out quite like it does in retail.
Achievements have been told are not happening what so ever.
The real thing is going to be able to inspect you for the NEW meta builds that people have developed and played to death on private realms and given us things like the flurry warrior tank, new druid builds that maximize the bologna out of your toolset and other things in that ballpark…
NO.
Add-ons like Raider .io are a detriment to WoW as a whole and classic does not need the toxicity that comes with similar add-ons. Even simple ones like Recount/Skada can bring loads of drama with a meter linked in raid/party.
Also unlikely to be possible in Classic, they have even said that they plan to limit the API so that certain non-Vanilla spirited addons simply cannot work.
They are also planning on limiting macro function support more so than Vanilla ever was.
They are doing this because it’s more authentic, and keeps the original experience alive.
It’s a choice I may not exactly like but at the same time I do agree with the reasoning that was given by the developers and in reality it’s better for the game.
This is something they even kinda hinted toward doing to Modern WoW also…
I don’t see any danger in having more information. I think having item level would take me personally away from the experience. But the rest I am fine with.
Sometimes not all rating addons started as a rating addon. Someone could grab all the information from the BIS list for all 6 content stages that is floating around in the forums and convert it into an addon for handy reference for players (something like atlasloot), so players can know which gear and where to find them for their class.
Then someone could use that list, assign a value score to each item, add inspect support and you could determine how well gear a player is compare to the BIS list. So a group leader instead of asking a possible invitee to their group for gear inspection at ironforge bridge or entrance of ogrimmar, they could just fire the addon and find out that infomation easily.
And like many rating addons in the past, it probably will start off with good intentions to provide a useful addon to the playerbase but it will get misused.
As long as they block that stupid io crap. Do whatever it takes to prevent them from trying to bring the cancer of LFG auto grouping or whatever to classic. Whatever it takes.
I’m not really bothered by using the modern API. I prefer to have a single-line macro for Faerie Fire (Feral), Faerie Fire being on a single button, rather than a paragraph. However, like the rest of the client, it needs to be scaled back to only have functions accessible that were accessible in vanilla.
Ok so The API is almost certainly gonna be the modern one with maybe a few functions disabled.
DPS meters will exist.(they existed in vanilla)
DBM/BigWigs raid addons will exist(they existed in vanilla)
warcraftlogs will exist(like I said earlier all it does is parse the combat log)
They said there would be no achievements so cant check those, you couldn’t check talents in vanilla but in modern inspect you can so not sure if they keep that or not(I hope they do)
Gearscore/ilvl would be kinda worthless as is, raider io doesnt really have a way to measure in vanilla so that prob wont work.
HOWEVER if you think someone wont come out with some kind of ranking addon, you are delusional.
