Yes.

Its blocked off.

No one can enter or leave the city but you can see the outter walls of it in Classic I believe

Correct. The 3rd undead zone ends at the wall.

Gilneas is only referenced in Classic. SFK is a high teens-to-mid 20s dungeon that is accessible/available from launch. It is the same layout as the current retail version, but the mobs, story, and questing are completely different.

Oh thanks! Was there a lore reason for why SFK was changed in cata?

I recall Shadowfang Keep instance as being just north of that wall, and unless the Paladin Quest for Verigan’s Fist is going to be revised, Shadowfang Keep pretty much has to be there as an available instance. Yes, a much different one from current day.

There is nothing behind the wall, just some beach at that point, a result of the devs apparently forgetting that Gilneas existed during TBC.

I think the simplest answer is that they wanted to give the Worgen (as a new playable race and enemies of the Forsaken) some backstory, lore, street cred, etc. So they had the whole Gilnean-Forsaken conflict run through SFK to sync with the quests for Gilneas and Silverpine Forest.

Gilneas lore wise had walled themselves off after the second war and were dealing with internal struggles during the events of Vanilla, TBC and Wrath. I.E Civil War and the outbreak of the Worgen Curse. When you start playing the Worgen starting zone you’re actually playing back in time up to the point where the sundering happens.

It’s tied to the worgen and forsaken leveling quests, the worgen finish just outside the wall near SFK and the forsaken end silverpine just near the wall. without going into to much detail
A group of former Gilneans became forsaken and took over SFK.

In the Vanilla version of Shadowfang Keep, it all about the worgen protecting their wizard master, who lorded over a town of cursed citizens who were just trying to exist during the day but monsters at night.

In Cataclysm, it was reflected to change the ongoing battle between the newly cleansed Gilneans and the Forsaken, leading up to the extermination of Godfrey, a forcibly raised Gilnean Forsaken who hated both what the Gilneas has become and what the Forsaken had done to him.

Gilneas is a big wall. Behind it is incomplete land with no definition bordered by mountains down to the sea (so you can’t get at it from the back).

SFK was a Worgen instance with mostly different bosses and some changes to the map.

I loved the fact that during the day they’d look human until combat, and then at night they were all worgen.

My lore probably isn’t completely accurate, but worgen have been in the game since Classic. Pre-cataclysm there was the Greymane Wall which lore wise I believe the city existed locked away behind it as a result of Genn, but the city wasn’t actually in game yet. The lore behind worgen was expanded upon when they became a playable race and Sylvanas invaded Gileas in Cata.

Or because there was no way to get past the wall till Cataclysm aside from glitching they saw no reason to spend a large amount of resources on something no one would legitimately see.

but do we get buckets & spades ?

(I wasn’t the person who said that but) Pirate Werewoofs would be cool.

Hehe, wonder if the “Werewoofs” will be skinnable again?

Very much looking forward to old school SFK again and getting pumped when “War” starts playing as soon as you get into the instance and Arugal does his little speech before porting away

You can get to the big ol’ Gilneas gates and see what the Forsaken had to deal with in their assault. It’s pretty cool.

And no, they didn’t forget Gilneas existed, there was no reason to render an entire zone since Gilneas was experiencing a lockdown, with no one being allowed entry or even being able to see the city.

Genn Greymane left the Lordaeron Alliance due to the decision to show the Orcs of the Second War mercy instead of executing them, in addition to the costs of running the internment camps and rebuilding Stormwind. He double downed by removing all military support from the Alliance (After Thrall’s successful liberation of the camps) and isolating his kingdom from the rest of the world with the giant wall.

It wasn’t the best of Genn’s decisions, due to the civil war that happened after and having Arugal summon the Worgen to fight off the Scourge, and when the Scourge was gone they went for the Gilneans.

They have not opened their doors in classic.
