Can someone explain alchemy economy?

Leveled up alchemy and got the r5 equipment, got a fair amount of spec points in to almost guarantee R3 products.

But the economy makes no sense. If I make a phial of tepid versatility for myself with my own mats, the awakened frost alone is 444 gold. That excludes the herbs and the vials.

The same phial R3 of tepid versality, consuming the same awakened frost+herbs+phial sells for 303 gold.

I’m actually losing substantial gold in crafting flasks for myself unless I’m getting 3-4 crafts from multicraft procs per each craft, rather than buying them off the AH.

The profession equipment alone was like 30k gold worth of mats…

People bought mats when Awak Frost was like 80-90g and crafted a lot of phials. And yes, multicraft + resourcefulness

At the moment, if you do not get a multi craft or resource proc, you are losing gold. Not to mention the undercutting morons.

Wouldn’t be so terrible if the alchemy trinkets weren’t absolute garbage and you could make money off that equipment instead…

Alchemy was nerfed to the ground

Full stop

Even if you are fully specced and have a lot of mats, you really aren’t making any money

It is intentional on the part of the devs

Just one more reason why we need to move on from this dev team

Like, I don’t even mind if it’s not a profitable profession like others and is just QoL, but at least let it be like previous alchemy where crafting my own flasks and pots wasn’t a money pit. It let me have long duration flasks and pots self sufficiently.

Now, I only gain benefit from the increased flask duration and I’m still encouraged to buy flasks from the AH instead of making my own and just sell the mats at the AH instead. Because making my own flasks and pots is an abject loss of money compared to buying them off the AH.

I also don’t understand their allergy to letting crafted trinkets be good while blacksmiths and JC’s can make BiS weapons and neck pieces. Alchemy trinkets could be a perfect place for letting alchemy be profitable.

I’m making money selling phials of tepid versatility. I leaned into multicraft. On the large scale I get enough procs to make money selling them on the AH. I do ensure they are rank 3 phials. It is RNG, but long term it has paid off for me. I generally make 30-50% over what I put into it based on multicraft procs and resourcefulness (I focus multicraft though)

In Season 3 Alchemy trinket is S-tier for resto shaman according to icy veins, dont know about other specs, so not garbage at all.

I craft my own flasks and it profitable for sure, no idea how you cant. Did you buy mats when they were at lowest price? Do you have max skill in phials? Best crafting gear? Etc

It’s the elementals.

No matter what you’re competing with what ever the most profitable item that can be made with them can support plus the demand for them being used in everything.

How are you ensuring R3 phials? I am maxed 122/100 skill, full mastery + phial tree, using mettle and I am still 5 skill points behind.

Are you using rank 3 mats?

Yup, of course. I’m 5 points off though and there’s nothing else to max out.
Maybe certain phials can never guarantee R3 apart from inspiration procs?

Use Craftsim addon to see what are you missing to R3. With insight, everything should be R3.

Which phial are you not able to rank 3? Each has different requirements

I checked out one of the harder phials, difficulty wise and I can rank 3 it
312 skill from talents, gear, natural skill points
+25% of 450 difficulty (rank 3 mats) = 112.5 skill
+30 skill from lesser illustrious insight
------------
454.5 skill

Never heard of that but I’ll look it up.

Figured out my problem.
I sent my alt a mixing rod recraft and didn’t complete it and logged off or something, then back on into my alch.
Was so confused why I could only get 445 but now that I actually put my tool back on I’m 455/450.
Duh!

awesome! I’m glad you figured it out.

One thing to keep in mind for the alchemy phials and potions if you ever try to track where all the skill points come from: There is a UI tooltip bug for decayology. It gives 40 skill points, not the 30 it says. The last point you put into it gives you 11 points instead of 1. The points are necessary to guarantee rank 3 phials/potions, so the bug isn’t in the amount you get but in that the tooltip doesn’t say it gives +10 skill in addition to the 1 skill you get for selecting it. Craftsim doesn’t catch this. I only found it out on my 3rd alchy alt because I was at 55 skill on the decay phial and 25/30 on decayology. I put 5 points in to max it at 30/30 and shot up to 70 skill on that phial. I think everything else displays properly.
