I mean… I know they can, but are they any good at it? I’m not speaking end game stuff, more like leveling dungeons and group quests?
yeah, they can do dungeons and group quest.
Yes paladins can tank 5 mans just fine. Just be sure to get consecrate first with your talents.
They can, it’s just a little harder. They have no taunt if they lose aggro, and while Consecrate is great, they can only do it so much before they’re OOM. Waiting for the tank to drink after pulls gets a little old as well…
Group quests, easy. Leveling dungeons, long as DPS is patient…
The only reason I don’t like grouping with paladin tanks is their downtime. They need to drink often if they are playing correctly. I’d rather have a bear or a warrior who can do the same things but better and faster. x.x
I love paladins in general though. I don’t mind bringing ret for dps/support and holy for its obvious amazingness.
Just healed ZF with a paladin that did not have Consecration, it was a massive nightmare. He basically had the least amount of healing required.
Rather take a bear or warrior due to a lot less downtime.
Honestly, it seems like if people are zerging dungeons with 4 mages, a pally tank/healer would be the best thing to accompany them.
- Unlike priest, the pally actually wants different gear than the mages
- If somebody for some weird reason wants to tank something (boss?) the pally can (sort of) do it, priest can’t. I guess pally probably won’t be able to keep himself up though, oh well.
- Similarly, the pally can actually grab aggro if some mob gets clear of the AoE spam. Even if one or more mobs do, the pally can grab aggro with consecrate.
- I guess pally could pull a room for zerging by running around and then bubbling. That’s how people used to pull Domo and Garr I think…
Rogues can tank. Priests, mages, warlocks, hunters druids. All can tank.
Question is, what are you wanting the tank to be able to perform at a sufficient level?
- Paladins have no taunt
- Paladin set bonuses are not specific for tanking
- Paladin plate gear used for tanking has very little intellect so Paladins can easily oom on protracted boss fights, negating their threat generation
They can tank 5mans where fights are short enough and taunt swaps rarely required. They can tank group quests in the outer world for similar reasons. But you will generally not find Paladins tanking raids, or at least not in progression groups. In The Burning Crusade these issues are soundly remedied and Prot Paladins become excellent tanks. But for Classic, no.
That’s why I play Horde
