I skipped the Korthia patch because I was burnt out on WoW and wasn’t really too excited about it. At the time I was full AOTC/M+15 Gear with Rank 4 Legendaries.
I just was hoping for a little clarification, as I cannot seem to find it when looking it up. I’m specifically wondering if I can buy a R6 Legendary piece off the AH so I can directly upgrade to R6 from R4, or do I need to also buy a R5.
On my server, it’s expensive right now for both, so I was hoping to only need to purchase R6.

You can skip right to 6, but it will require the same amount of mats to craft it as if you were crafting a rank 5 as well.
So rank 5 costs 1100 Soul Cinders. Rank 6 costs 1650 Soul Cinders.
To skip right to rank 6 you will need 2750 Cinders.
I would add though, to make sure to look into 9.2 tier gear and legendary systems before committing to upgrade an old legendary item though. I’d hate to see you spend the gold and cinders on an item that might potentially be in the wrong slot.

Yeah I’m an ele shaman main and right now it seems that my legendaries haven’t changed much, but I’ll give it another look before committing. All I know right now is my playstyle changes with 4 set.
You will only need 1650 cinders total to go from a rank 4 to 6. As you increase the ranks, the ones you contribute at the lower ranks also contribute to the higher. So, for example, a rank 5 would cost 1100 cinders, but upgrading to a 6 from a 5 would only be an additional 550 cinders.
As Zipster mentioned, it is important to look into how 9.2 has changed with regards to the best legendary. You will be able to use the covenant legendary power separately with a memory obtained from Zereth Mortis, so you probably wouldn’t want to craft or upgrade a covenant legendary in a regular slot until you obtain the memory of unity, which would allow you to equip a second legendary with the covenant power.
As an added tip, if you decide you’d rather swap legendary powers, you can now scrap them at the runecarver, so you get all the currency that was put into them, but will lose the base (which is the costly part, I know).
