Can I switch out professions?

I have mining and blacksmith right now. Can I switch out to skinning? If so do I lose say my mining points? Also would it cost money to get it again? New to all this. Didn’t care for any of this stuff when I was high and only 17 playing it back in ‘04 lol.

Yes, yes, and yes.

Yes to all your points, but I would reconsider skinning. Skinning is an absolute garbage profession right now if money is your primary concern. Everyone and their brother went skinning, so profits from leather is lower on AH after AH cut than it would be simply vendoring.

You want big money makers you’re going to want Herbalism, Tailoring, or Enchanting.

Listen to this guy, though also look at your server. On my server we have tons of tailors so its not super good for money making but I only see one enchanter, not counting myself, offering public enchanting services.

Look at what your server has a high demand of and a low supply of, and try to get in through there. Does your server need a blacksmith? Go blacksmithing.

Skinning is one of the most lucrative professions while leveling purely due to the sheer amount of beasts you kill. While skins are definitely not worth anything on the Ah, they still vendor decently and stack up high. Just vendor them any time you have the chance, and you increase the gold you make by a decent amount. It also automatically stays leveled with you so you don’t have to go out of your way like mining or herbalism.

The three you listed rely on other players to make money.

You raise a very good point about being aware of server supply/demand. That said, my main argument re: tailoring was bags, which is always gold, because bag space is always going to be a premium commodity for the life of classic.

As for enchanting, it’s less about offering the service to others, and more about converting low vendoring blue dungeon drops into high valued shards once you’re at the phase where you’re farming specifically for money and not upgrades, or XP.

Yes, and I’m ALL about raw gold farming vs playing the very volatile market that is new servers. That said, it’s a bit like investing in real life. Skinning has very low barrier to entry, and its practically a passive income source, similar to keeping your money in a High Yield Savings Account and letting the interest accrue.

This is fine. But it’s also not going to be netting you hundreds and hundreds of gold like Herbalism can once people start raiding en masse and need flask mats.

Tailoring is similar if you farm humanoids vs beasts. If you’re farming humanoids you’re going to be swimming in cloth. You can vendor/AH that as you see fit, or you can turn them immediately into bags which will be worth far more than the sum of their parts.

Making money on Enchanting is less about selling the enchants themselves, but rather converting low value dungeon blues like armor pieces that would only vendor for a couple silver, into shards that will sell for a couple gold.

Ahhhhh fair point. Bags are always going to sell well and fast. They are a relatively easy way to make some money fast, especially if you go out of your way to farm a meas of cloth and selling the bolts you craft can also probably save you net you some cash as well.

to unlearn a profession click k then hover over where it says blacksmithing and click it to unlearn. then yes you can learn skinning. you do have to pay for it. and also don’t forget to buy a skinning knife.
