Can I install WoW on an external SSD?

I uninstalled WoW some time ago, but was thinking of coming back. Unfortunately, my SSD is running low on space (it didn’t have much space to begin with), and I’m sure installing WoW again will leave it with almost no space left.

But I have an external SSD that I barely have used with tons of space left. Can I install WoW on it, or will that cause problems?

I recommend moving this thread to the Technical Support forum.

You can edit your post (click the pencil icon) and select the Technical Support forum from the dropdown menu above the post to move it.

Done. Sorry about that.

Assuming the external SSD is actually good in terms of random read/write and compressed files handling the it will be just fine. It can be bit annoying to manage as you have to have the SSD connected before BNet launches so it won’t have to start looking for a missing game location.

It’s not recommended to install it on an external SSD.

At the start of Shadowlands my external SSD I bought for wow was working just fine, but in early to mid november I started having updating issues with battle net that still havent gone away. It may be the external, it may be something else, so take that with a grain of salt. The game still runs perfectly fine so if you’re ok with it potentially taking a minute or 2 to download phantom game data every time you load the bnet launcher I’d say it’s worth it, especially if you’re like me and have no other options.

Thanks all. I have another question. My computer also has a internal HDD with 1.78 TB free space remaining. Would it just be safer to install WoW there instead? I know that loading times will increase, but besides that, would it be fine?

It would be fine yes. As you say it may mean slower loads but will work.

The internal HDD would be safer but you’d have weaker performance.

Well I always play with the graphics toned down because I don’t like to push my computer too hard.

I’ll give it a try. Thanks again all.

I’ve run it on an external SSD with no issues at all. Just be sure it’s a USB 3.0 connection. You won’t get the same improvements as an internal SSD, but it works just fine.
