Can dracthyr fly?

Can they fly without a mount? It would be absolutely HILARIOUS to see a flightless dragon with wings.

They can glide without a mount. They cannot perform fancy tricks in the sky like the Dragonriding mounts can. Ion answered that question in this video. (video will start at the the question about Drachtyr)

Do they have a dragon form? Are they their own dragon mount? (Sandstone drake style)

They can ride the Dragon mount in their humanoid form. But they can fly (glide) without their mount in their dragon form. (sounds like they can use the Dragonriding system in dragon form)

I read in one interview they have some flight move something similar to DHs, limited more like gliding or diving
I think diving was the term used

while listening I noticed he was talking about it as if it’s still just a concept. Which kind of worries me!

They haven’t officially got it running in a test environment yet it sounds like. Yikes.

That is absolutely idiotic and an incredibly stupid design choice, but Ion knows best, as always. At least with dh, you can be like “they need more demonic transfigurations to sustain flight.” Thank you for answering though.

Notes from Wow Head on the Interview:

  • Dracthyr will have access to the baseline form of dragonriding using their own wings, but the “upgraded versions that players will earn through dragonriding” will require using the dragon companion.

  • This also allows dracthyr to engage with a dragon companion like every other race, and all the visual customization that comes with it.

  • Dragonriding dracthyr will use their visage (humanoid) form, since “dragon riding dragon gets a little weird.”

  • Dracthyr can fly outside of the Dragon Isles without a mount, though it’s more like an enhanced form of gliding than actual flight.

  • Can the Dracthyr fly outside of the Dragon Isles without a mount? Ion answer: Yes, they can, although again it’s like an enhanced form of gliding, the baseline unupgraded version can get a little bit of lift, but it’s like Demon Hunter, with cool momentum and physics.

  • But you’ll still want to have your flying mount if you’re going across the continent, ok cool.

  • Dragonriding isn’t intended to reduce the function or amount of regular mounts - Dragon Isles will still feature a lot of new mounts for players to collect.

  • Dragonriding doesn’t fully replace regular mounts, it’s mostly for covering long distances or accessing hard to reach areas, while just running around will still use the broader collection of normal mounts.

  • Upgrades earned over time will help you reach higher up places or quickly return to town.

Essentially he says its similar to DH gliding, except they’ll have the momentum factor of the Dragonriding.
It’s not gonna be able to fly like a flying mount itself.

Maybe, or they are, but that’s why this is called an expansion reveal and not an expansion launch. The average time between an expansion reveal and its launch is 380 days.

These two seem contradictory. So we can travel long distances, kinda like jessica jones, right? I’m actually 100% ok with that if that’s what he means.

I could be wrong, but it sounds like Dracthyr can use the dragonriding system without a mount in Dragon Isles, but in old zones, they can only glide like DH can. Sounds like the Dragonriding system isn’t imagined in old zones yet?

I think since it’s a new race it should be like druids flight form just as a dragon. Maybe limited to a normal flying mount and flight form of druids but gliding is not flying as they said. Hopefully that’s where they land with the concept.

Usually when there is a reveal they already have the expansion ready for testing. I think they are running way behind this time around due to all of the things and shake ups they went through. They are staffing up now and I hope alot of this is on a fast track now.

It would explain why there was no game play videos.

They already said its gonna be only for the Dragon Isles.

I greatly recommend you to go on wowhead and read all the interviews that had been going on, they answer a lot of questions you might have on diverse subjects.

Not at all, have you ever seen an alpha dropping as soon as they reveal an expansion? Its always been clearly unfinished.

It would be awesome if they could fly, so of course they won’t be able too.

They with be in the demon hunter " I have wings, but I still can’t fly" support group every Tuesday and Thursday.

Who knows what the future will bring!

Just to add more,
Legion has been revealed in August 2015, and the Alpha started in November 2015.
Shadowlands was revealed in November 2019, Alpha started in April.

Legion took 4months, Shadowlands took 6months between reveal and alpha starting.
So you can expect Dragonflight Alpha to start in August or September, but I’d rather they take their time to polish their stuff.

Wait I’m sorry…

They’re giving us dragons, but not really dragons with one class and they can’t even fly without a mount?

I know it’s normally druid territory, but even if it has a cast time, the idea of them not being able to FULLY fly is ridiculous to me. Also hearing more about dragon riding makes it sound like it’s not flying at all so… We’ll see.

We don’t see the Alpha dropping. The general public only sees the Beta drop. Edited to add …

When I said testing environment I was talking about the Internal. As in, they’ve built it and are working internally. They can show In game videos from that. Which Now that I think of it. They did show us in game videos of dragon flying so they must have it to that point.

Ion probably was talking in that manner because he personally didn’t have the answer.

I wonder could it be because they are not full dragons? They are half breeds between dragon and mortals, they the have some dragon abilities but not all of them, so then can glide but not fully fly, not hard for me to understand
