Can Blizzard please sue to shutdown private servers once Classic launches?

Private servers could fit into the same space as something akin to Star Wars galaxies emulator since the game wasn’t available anymore; people could host the game on their own servers provided they weren’t making money from it.

Well, now that Classic is coming, the game is no longer deadware, or software allowed to be freely reverse engineered and hosted by anyone to be played for free on private servers.

This means that Blizzard could sue for any private servers to be shutdown and force private server players to sub for Classic in order to get the Vanilla experience.

I hope they sue. I hope they get the private servers shut down.

Blizzard, please do this; please have had this as part of your plan all along.

This is the definition of petty. Why are you so concerned?

I don’t have a dog in the fight, either way.

The private server population is going to plummet anyway, the majority of people only played them because that was their only option.

It never was “allowed to be freely reverse engineered and hosted by anyone to be played for free on private servers”. It’s always been Blizzard’s protected Intellectual Property, regardless of whether or not Blizzard was operating Classic servers.

This seems rather petty and pointless.

What do private servers running have to do with you playing classic? How would you benefit by creating drama against them?

Yes, the word petty definitely springs to mind.

worry about your pockets vs private servers that are self funded… jesus.

Considering that private servers exist for all versions of WoW including BfA, this really belongs in General Discussion.

All the good ones that I know of are shutting down a few days before Classic release, as their admin teams have stated on each of their websites.

I think you will find vast majority of Pservers with good admin teams following same road to Classic.

Afaik they can’t because the servers are hosted in Russia (I think) and they don’t give a damn about US copyright. Why do you care anyways?

Last I heard, they are shutting down in a week.

However, what do you care?

You don’t need to worry about shutting them down. After this launches, their population is going to nosedive anyway. People played on them because there was no other option. Blizzard refused to host older versions. Now that official classic is here, privates no longer serve a purpose. Some servers are trying to remain relevant longer by hosting expansions, but their days are numbered too. Once Blizzard gets up to crusade and wrath, private servers are just obsolete. (Does anyone actually want to replay Cataclysm? Laugh.)

Its actually IP protection. Though they wouldnt sue as much as send a C&D.

Don’t have anything against pservers but wouldn’t have a problem with Blizzard shutting them down either.

Because they’re made available to American players, and American players have logged onto them, that forces them to fall under US copyright law.

I have no issue with Blizzard protecting their IP. I find it disturbing that some rando is so worried about it when it doesn’t affect them one way or the other.

Where are we going to go when blizz completely fumbles on classic and never removes sharding abuse, then?

Im out of likes, have one
If Classic fails because blizzard ruined it I’m definitely going to play a private server even if I hadn’t until now. I want the real vanilla not layerilla
