You can quest in Stonetalon, yes. I quested there back in Vanilla. There was a good amount of quests for alliance if I remember right.
There is a path in Ashenvale that will take you straight into Stonetalon.
You’ll have to pass through the Barrens, and as I recall, there are only a handful of quests. You’re better off doing Wetlands/Darkshire imo.
Edit: As Summer pointed out there is a path directly from Ashenvale to Stonetalon, a narrow tunnel, had no idea until I googled it just now.
No, you don’t have to go through the Barrens. There is a path in Ashenvale that will take you right into Stonetalon.
There’s more than a handful of quests. There might not be as many as Wetlands or Darkshire, but there’s quite a few there and they can be enjoyable, if you like the zone.
I never quested much there, except for the warrior class quest chain that has you kill some stuff in the Charred Vale (think that’s what its called).
You can get there through a pass in southern Ashenvale (a bit west of the Morshan Rampart). I’m pretty sure there’s a breadcrumb quest from Astranaar that has you seek out that pass.
Is there an alliance flightpath? I eventually want to go to desolace (is that the zone just to the south of it?)
There may be a flightpath at Stonetalon Peak in the northwest part of the zone, where all the dryads and druid npcs are.

Stonetalon peak has the alliance flight point in vanilla.
Wasn’t that added in Cata though?

No, I remember going through that pass back in Vanilla with my guild members and coming across my first flagged horde players. It’s there.
As Eekamouse said, I seem to also remember a breadcrumb quest in Ashenvale leading me there and through the pass.
I remember doing quests there back in the day. Nice and peaceful there, not a lot of competition. Don’t remember how many quests there are but I do remember being there for a while. There’s a FP in the north for alliance iirc.
Looked it up on wowhead. 21 quests there. Might be good for a level or 2 since ill be wanting to go to desolace anyways.

No, Crapaclysm closed the tunnel and terra-formed the border between Ashenvale and Stonetalon to create a road through Talondeep Pass (Stardust Spire).

The main thing that is ever said about cata is how it ruined the world. I wouldnt say thats immature. I personally cant think of a zone i found to be better post cata. If i recall correctly i did alot of loremaster after cata as well so thats my general consensus too.

Its a tunnel on the south east side of the map leading to Stone Talon.

Got to see Ashenvale POPULATED by Night elves and actually FIGHTING Horde. That was amazing to see.

Got to see MORE Alliance represenatation in Kalimdor and safe harbor instead of going there and thinking it is all Horde Territory.

Darkshore mystery with that sword stabbed in the Skull was finally answered AND you get to wipe out an entire Troll tribe!

Westfall is no longer a singular tower but a fortess. Glad to see the evolution of that.

Same for redridge. Most of the Map is no longer own by the horde but instead youcan unlock it via Flight Path.

Stonetalon in particular was VERy nice for questing from an Alliance stand point. You get to see actual war in warcraft.

Eastern Plagueland being Heal was amazing to see, the Argent tower rebuilt was breath taking. Hearthen gleen revived, and the Western Plagueland revitalization. Love it.
