Calm and rational discussion please!

I would like to know from the individuals who aren’t foaming at the mouth (or keyboard), Why is this an acceptable standard from a company with the wealth they have.

This is my first time being here for launch day, and I was well aware that getting in was going to be a hassle, especially since I moved to a more populated server.
What I was not prepared for was the consistent loop of loading screen to disconnected to black screen. I expected a que, first come first served, and a good bit of lag.

This for me has been extremely surprising, and while I’m aware the pandemic has caused problems in their ability to create as they might usually do, this seems more like a hardware issue to me (given I don’t work in the field) of servers simple being incapable of managing this work load. If that is the case, why shouldn’t people expect more from the company they’re throwing money at?

Thanks in advance,
do remember we have enough hate threads right now, Id like this one to remain civil.

There isnt one. Truth be told this is identical to what happened for the pre-patch launch and despite that (learning opportunity) nothing really changed.

From a Corporate perspective, the player base will not cancel a subscription over this. So maybe they lose a few out of protest, but most likely they will just come back. Large corporations understand money. If they dont have to “assign” resources to fix something they wont.

Another thing to keep in mind, is in order to drive change our wallet is the biggest resource we have. Look at EA and the loot box system. they almost lost the Star Wars licensing for that move and games afterwords have "toned down’ the monetization of whats pretty much gambling. Why? Because people boycotted.

It’s not. At all.

Honestly, this is the worst day 1 I’ve experienced short of TBC, and TBC’s day 1 experience was THE reason that Northrend had Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord, it’s why Cata gave you Hyjal OR Vashjir to start, Mists split the Horde and Alliance between the far north and the south end of Jade Forest, Draenor put Horde and Alliance on opposite sides of the continent, and Legion and BFA both gave us the option to pick our order.

There was a REASON for that, and it had nothing to do with storytelling.

EXPANSION OF SERVER ARCHITECTURE COSTS MONEY…
CUTS INTO REVENUES…
AND THE EXPANDED ARCHITECTURE IS ONLY NECESSARY
AROUND MAJOR EVENTS, LIKE LAUNCHES…
Kind of like a states building 10 lane superhighways to accommodate Olympic Games Traffic volumes…Expanded Roads that will thereafter be largely
unnecessary…

I’m not a Blizzard fan boy but, honestly, I think people don’t realize how big of a feat launching a game of this size is. I’ve worked in IT for 10 years, and I can say you will always have problems with millions of people logging into servers all at once…even if you start spinning up other instances. It’s just the nature of the technology. Once people give it a break and the population flattens out a bit, then it will get better.

Are you saying that it’s not because of the large volume of logins, but because they’re not spread out. As in, if we were to all of us log in staggered the servers would not be having this issue?

It shouldn’t be. This used to be the norm. Now it’s usually the exception. I don’t know which it is in this case, because no one I know is having issues, I only see some posts about issues here. I know bfa launch was mostly smooth except for a couple servers.

It isn’t acceptable, but at the same time it isn’t surprising.

This is an extremely normal launch experience. Basically everyone bottlenecks into one small space and it just overloads things.

Technically speaking can something be done? Sure. Would it be anywhere near cost effective? Nope.

This is annoying, for sure, but it’ll resolve itself relatively soon.

They don’t want to invest in a solution for a problem that happens one day every two years.

If the appropriate response here is to simply give up and wait until the “Bottleneck” Is cleared, what would be an appropriate time-frame. Should we expect the game to be playable in an hour? two? What’s reasonable for those who are just as eager to play as those who currently are, but have to bide their time.

Edit, Seems like i like the word simply today.

If the problems are purely login issues and not technical issues, I wouldn’t say it’s perfectly acceptable, but why would they rent out servers for a lunch just for a month or so?

Admittedly I don’t know the length of time servers are purchased in but I wouldn’t pay hundreds of thousands of dollars a few months especially for a problem that will Rectify itself in a few hours.

It’s a business decision and wow as a player I hate it I completely understand it from their perspective

Pretty much. There’s only so much thorough-put the network can take. My guess is if it was staggered, it would work. And some people on this thread have eluded to this as well, but there may be a way to beef everything up, or change the architecture, but it’s simply not cost effective to fix 1 day of bad experiences

3-4 hours or tomorrow I imagine, on your server you should be clear faster than that to be honest.

The only sane answer (and that’s how I know it will get almost completely ignored here): not worth getting CERN level servers for a player overflow that happens one time every two years.

Ah, well i guess ill be ready tommorow then, Im no longer on emerald dream, im playing on area 52.

Thanks everyone!

I’d say its not really acceptable now days. The last 2 expansions Blizz has done I was able to log in and play from launch. This time round I’m sitting in a revolving cycle of load screen, character not found, black screen, repeat. All my friends are in the game, I logged in well before launch just to be booted at 6:01 pm est and not able to log back since.

Blizz expected this, everyone expected a huge number of log ins. So idk what else to say really.

i was just able to get in after a 30 minutes of trying, fyi
