But reddit said players optimized the fun out of the game

I keep seeing this comment on reddit. Youtube. Yet the population of classic enjoyers remains strong. Corpos cant make a decent AAA mmorpg so people keep resubbing to classic era.

I think its 100% true people optimise out their fun, which is just a way of saying they’ve adopted a playstyle for performance that makes them unhappy, when they could be happy playing differently. Like when people play on PvP servers but they hate open world pvp. Not sure how the devs affect that, is player choice. And min-max is fun for some, just not for all.

The way these people talk its like someone put a gun to their head and forced them to farm mats

Farming stuff is part of the game

and honestly a really fun part. I almost exclusively play for open world farming. (all in my opinion of course).

Tangentially related, sometimes people get mad at me a call me a blizzard shill cause I say keeping up with botting is actually a gargantuan task, but as an open world farmer I’m probably one of the more directly per-gameplay-style affected players. They suck! It’s just… Botters aren’t dumb people, they know how to get the cash before detection.

If these people complained about bots i’d give them more credit. That’s at least a valid criticism of the current state.

I’d recommend checking out this article, “Water Finds a Crack”, about game design.

https://www.designer-notes.com/game-developer-column-17-water-finds-a-crack/

Basically, especially in a social and/or competitive game, people literally cannot stop themselves from using more optimal routes and methods once they’re discovered. Because at the end of the day, why would they make a conscious decision to do things in a way they know is inefficient?

I completely agree with you that people act like victims of this issue. I’m sick of the way people treat this game like a full-time job and care so deeply only about metrics like EXP per hour, or being paid for the “service” of healing or tanking a dungeon, or spending thousands of gold to rank 0.5 percentile higher on Warcraft logs, etc. I miss when people just played the game to chill and have a fun time playing with other people. I miss the time when you could actually kind of get lost in the game world rather than being constantly reminded that the other characters you’re playing with are just representations of other people behind a mouse and keyboard.

That being said, to a certain degree, one must understand that it’s human nature to look at challenge in a game as a problem to be “solved”, and to circumvent that challenge forever once a solution is found. It’s just ironic that the lengths people will go to avoid facing challenges in a game, can themselves, be a challenge. :stuck_out_tongue:

I get it scientifically but the part of my my brain that elevates me above chimpanzee status is able to use this thing called self control. I honestly wonder how any of these people have day jobs if they have so little (i mean i assume wow players even have jobs but maybe im ascribing too much here)

I enjoy meme specs. Mained a shadow priest and had a lot of fun! Boomkin was my co-main

No you didnt! The game has been optimized to death and nobody is allowed to play anything creative! Im totally not gas lighting you right now about the experience you had!
