Built new computer / wow runs worse

I recently built a new computer and I am playing WoW classic on it. I have noticed more and more what seems like lag. The screen becomes very choppy like there is bad lag or very low FPS.

At one point, it was nearly unplayable. Here’s some stats for that time:
Playing on Ultra Settings.
40ms
FPS jumping between 105 and 180.
Internet Speed Test: 600 mbps down / 41 up

Hardware:
Geforce RTX 2080 6gb. Running at 63 degrees.
32GB RAM on board
Alienware 34 inch Ultrawide Gsync monitor. AW3418DW

I feel like this new build should be able to run WoW Classic without a hitch. But the performance is nearly unplayable at times. Any ideas? Need any more information ?

You are selective on the systems details you are choosing to share, which leads one to speculate that your issue(s) have little/nothing to do with what you have listed.

For any rendition of WoW, all you need is any generation of i7 (4 cores / 8 threads) @2.5GHz or better, 8GB RAM, a SSD, Win7/10, and a decent Video card. With todays prices, all doable for ~$500 US

Anything newer/faster is personal preference for apps other than WoW (though most games/apps will still work just fine with the listed spec), or pure shinyitis.

Try capping your frame rate to your monitor’s max refresh rate minus a few frames - e.g. 144hz max refresh rate, cap to 140fps.

Make sure your graphics card driver is updated. New one dropped yesterday. There have been issues since windows released their latest major update.

Thanks, I see the update for the video card driver and did that. I also will cap the frame rate. Will see tonight after work if there are any more issues. Thanks for the help!

I’ve updated both Windows and the latest video drivers through the Geforce Experience app. I also capped the max foreground FPS to 100 which is 5 below the refresh rate on my monitor.

The game still stutters very frequently. Incredibly frustrating given the build I have setup.

Any other ideas? Or need other information about my setup?

Hey Secretpete,

We have seen similar issues with Gsync, so you could try disabling that temporarily. You may also want to try testing DirectX11 to see if there’s any difference.

If this doesn’t help, we should get a DxDiag so we can take a closer look:

  1. Press Windows Key + R.
  2. Type DxDiag and press Enter.
  3. In the DxDiag window, click Save All Information.
4)Name the file “dxdiag” and click Save
  4. Paste the DXdiag into the post, select and highlight everything you just pasted, and hit the “code” button (</>). That’ll make the information much more readable.
It should look like this.

Also check that both the Nvidia power management is highest possible, and the windows power management is highest possible. That seemed to fix a similar problem i was having a couple of months ago.

Get rid of the Geforce Experience app. That app has caused more problems than it has ever solved.

Hi, I believe the problem is fixed now! I turned off Gsync and I have not had a problem since. I will keep an eye on things in case anything comes up again.
