Bugged Quest: The Storm King's Vengeance (WoTLK)

Algar the chosen no longer aggros, he just flies around and will not engage. You can use the mechanic to throw corpses at him to kill him, but it doesn’t count as a kill for the quest since he won’t aggro.

Should have posted under this character, found the issue on this one.

Confirmed to be an issue.

Here’s what happened to me:

  1. The only thing that did damage to him consistently was throwing corpses at him. Sometimes he healed instantly after I did damage. This ‘instant heal’ behavior is similar to when an enemy breaks leash and returns to its ‘home position’ and evades damage. This clued me in to the possibility that the NPC was somehow not in aggro range of my giant vehicle, despite the fact that I was right on his butt chasing him the entire time.

  2. I killed him once by throwing corpses at him. I was lucky enough that he didn’t instantly heal while I was doing damage. I was excited. Then, the quest did not give me credit when I killed him this way. I realized that there was something seriously wrong here.

  3. I followed him around for a solid 10 minutes spamming all of my abilities, trying to get him to properly aggro me and attack me in melee range, because I believed that killing him by throwing corpses was the unintended way to kill him and that is why I didn’t get credit. The NPC continued his flying loop around the arena, virtually ignoring me. None of my attacks aggroed or did any damage… until…

Suddenly it DID.

I don’t know what I did differently. I don’t know how to recreate this. I wish I could explain it so that people won’t run into the same error that I did. And I also hesitated to confirm here that I eventually got this NPC to aggro me because I don’t want Blizzard to think this isn’t a problem and ignore this bug report. This is absolutely a problem. I do not believe that chasing this NPC around his arena for 10 minutes alternatively doing no damage, watching him insta-heal out of the damage you DID manage to do, or killing him and getting no credit for it is an intended mechanic for this quest. And I do not believe it will be easy for anyone doing this quest to consistently recreate my fluke of a success. I don’t even know what I did differently to aggro him and kill him.

TL;DR: While I will confirm it IS possible to properly aggro and kill him- I can’t tell you how I did it. For now, your Northrend Loremaster achievement is safe from this quest-- if you can manage to get lucky enough to pull off the same thing I did. All I can say is that I somehow got him to aggro me while he was at the ‘lowest’ point of his flight loop (closest to the ground.) I was spamming abilities and jumping up and down. Whatever got him to finally notice me, you might-- MIGHT-- be able to do it, too.

Blizzard, please take a look into this quest and address it. The bugginess of this NPC’s aggro range appears to be a huge issue.

If you go to the center where the portal to the flying fortress is you will aggro him.
