I can't speak to some of the problems I've read about, but I can say that my experience with the taming of Gara was horrific mainly because of this video:

That said I will say this video is awesome in most every other aspect! Especially in helping to tame all the other Spirit Beasts you can tame up to patch 8.0. Incidentally I don't think Blizzard has added any new Spirit Beasts to the maps of Zandalar or Kul Tiras yet.
I encountered a problem after dropping the spirit effigy at the grave site and that was only because I watched this video and was thinking that I had to kill Xan right after dropping it when he briefly appears which is only to petnap Gara because you freed Om'ra and him don't wike dat too much :(.
This stems from the fact that in this video the gentleman that created it plants the seed that one particular aspect of this process might be "glitched" for you when that is not the case at all. This is a two part taming/process and requires a lot of gathering mats to then craft this "Spirit Effigy", get the "Void Lamp", using it at the "Great Tree Valuundira", clicking the "Shadowmoon Voidblade" inside this dead tree, entering the void realm and killing Xan to be able to ultimately tame Gara.
I don't know why Blizzard doesn't just make this a questline for BM hunter's only that starts at Gara!!! It would be so much easier and probably eliminate this entire 3 page thread!!! That would still be more difficult than finding/taming ALL of the other Spirit Beasts aside from the timer aspect. IMPO this is just another long neglected aspect of the game (and in specifically the BM Hunter's goals to attain what is arguably the most coveted Spirit Beast in WOW) on Blizzard's part.
That said I will dispense with my whining and post the two links that I think are great to follow regarding the taming of Gara alone. If you want to tame the rest the video I linked above is a great overall video to guide you in doing that, but I do NOT recommend it for Gara.

I was doing the "quest" (more like sequence of events as there is no actual quest log for this) to tame Gara the Spirit Beast in Shadow Moon Valley. Finally was given the option to tame Gara.
Anyways this is where the issue started. Part way through me casting tame on Gara my client crashed. When I was able to get back in I had not successfully tamed Gara, I triple checked both stable and active pets to be certain. I can click the dagger in the tree no problem and re-enter the Void Realm. Problem is Gara is no longer spawning in the void realm nor will he appear when I kill Xan again. I have tried this several times with no luck.
I checked the forums and did intensive searches online to see if anyone else has had the same issue and found nothing. Gara no longer shows up in my game neither at the grave or to help me fight in the Void Realm. This makes it so I can't tame him and this is becoming increasingly frustrating. It was something I was greatly looking forward to. Does anyone know of a way to get Gara to respawn?
I'm curious after my epic struggle to tame this pet if Blizzard ever stepped in to help you because this is the only post I've read that sounds like a legit bug in the coding versus just something you have to figure out like removing mats. Be it berries or other mats still in your bags that were preventing Xan from spawning to begin with, which IMO is not necessarily a glitch but more so an oversight on the player or Blizzard's part either one. Did you ever tame this pet regardless of whether or not Blizzard helped? I feel for you and your plight!
I did exactly what u said and he spawned first kill after I took the berries out after 3 hours fml
January 2022, I happen to me also. Got all the way to taming Gara. I say the hearts, telling me taming was in progress. Gara did not appear. I have been back an forth to the grave yard and the dead tree, looking for Gara. Killing Xan, again and again.
I have many other characters that have succeeded in taming Gara. So I know the process.
Why does Blizzard not want to help us.
I have a similar issue, I have completed up until getting the void lantern and using at the Great Tree Valuundira in Shadowmoon Valley, then Iâm meant to kill elder void lords and elder void callers until Xan spawns but no enemies spawn and when I search for where they are everything says at the tree. Please help!
i have a quick question i have tamed gara but i was curious if you could only tame it once or have 2 active tames at the same time?
So i got to the part to tame Gara but was disconnected when i killed the boss. I load back in and the wolf is still a ghost and nothing happens afterwards. i cant do anything
