Buffs and Dots Effects

Good Morning,

Wondering do trinket procs/buffs effect current dots on the target or do they only
effect new casts?

As of the start of Legion (I think, might have been WoD), all trinkets, buffs, and procs affect all active DoTs automatically and instantly, even without recast. The same goes for when those fade, DoTs immediately lose the benefits of any trinket/buff/proc that fades while they are active as well. And that applies to all classes. The only ones that “snapshot” (ie. don’t apply until you recast, and persist for the entire duration of the recast) are ones that specifically note that (off the top of my head, Tiger’s Fury for feral and Exsanguinate for Assassination). To my knowledge, there are no relevant effects that work this way for Affliction DoTs.

Edit: I’m going to test this in a bit, but UA might work differently, since it’s only a quasi-DoT. It, for example (and to my knowledge), does not have a reduced duration, increased tick rate, or gain increased ticks from haste, since it already scales with haste due to our soul shard income being tied to Agony ticks (which scale with haste). I wouldn’t be surprised if it also snapshotted buffs when cast for similar reasons, since it’s intended to some extent to function as a nuke cast (like Chaos Bolt), it just deals damage over a short duration for spec flavor. I’ll update this when I get a chance to test it later this evening, unless someone beats me to it.

Yea, like the guy above said, snapshotting was removed several xpacs ago, and now your dots change when CDs begin or end. Same goes for reorigination array in uldir - if a trinket proc ends and swaps you from one stat to another, the dot damage changes instantly.
