Budget Built Help Please

This is a comparison with a 1660 Super

Look for the data showing the 10100 with 3200mhz run @ XMP 2666.

It’s around the same as the 3100, but faster than the 3300x with 3200mhz memory, and faster than both once you get into the super high (but prohibitively expensive) memory speeds.

It’s decent. You won’t be able to tell the difference really without an FPS meter.

That’s a lot of info but from what I can understand, with the 1660 graphics card and the quality turned up to 10 at the minimum it’s pulling at least 40 frames. Assuming I’m correct, that’s far better that what I’m currently doing.

Exactly what is the Ballston xmp? Is that the board?

Also, thank you. You’ve been extremely helpful.

ballistix is the ram kit, xmp is the profile setting he used. Those FPS minimums are going to be crap on any system, just some worse than others.

In the Dungeon with a 1660 Super at 1080p max settings, the i3-10100 with your B460 board and 2666mhz RAM would be most closely represented in this video to perform at 117 fps average, 80fps low, and bottoming out at 67fps 0.1% minimums (this is like mini stutter representation). On average you’ll get around 117fps in that scenario.

In the raid setting, with a 1660 Super, 1080p max settings, with a B460 board and 2666mhz RAM, you could expect similar results to 97 average fps, 68fps 1% lows, and 59fps 0.1% fps

But all that said, if you are using a 1660p, the 10100 w/2666mhz memory you won’t notice much of a difference between the 10100, 3100, or even an i7-10700k at stock settings specifically in WoW.

VRM is Voltage Regulator Module. It supplies power to your CPU. Cooler is better. MSI B460M Bazooka is one of the cheapest without breaking the bank. It can even handle Core i9-10900 when you decide to upgrade in the future.

Overclocking?

So coming from where I am now, I’m not seeing a downside to the i3, as long as I’m using a good graphics card. I can always upgrade later.

Thank you for the explanation.

There’s some other details, and if you play games other than WoW, I’d consider the 10400/3600 instead.

If you can get the 3600 for $199 or so it would pair well with a cheaper B550 and give you better performance, performance for other games, and be a bit wider for running more things simultaneously.

So this is my new build based on what you’ve told me. The graphics card is not as good as the one in the video though so I’m due that week have an effect but it’s above WoW’s minimum.

I’d see if you can get the i3-10100F which should cost around $100 - it seems unavailable right now.

I’d also swap out to this one which has a bit better VRM cooling, and integrated Wifi

MSI MAG B460M Mortar (WIFI) and Asus TUF B460M-PLUS (WIFI) is better.

Those look good too. I like the wifi ones. But those start to encroach upon Z490 territory.

Yeah, this video is dedicated on humiliating some cheap Z490 boards.

Its somehow hilarious.

Yeah, can’t speak for the Z490 boards specifically. It’s likely the performance problems are just due to the 10-core chips.

On the i3, i5, or probably even the i7, this probably won’t be an issue. The benefits of the Z boards will likely outweigh the drawbacks of the B and H chipsets.

I agree though, it makes locking down stupid.

Never heard of this place so I’m looking into it.

And I might pick up that board too. It’s about the same price.

Boards are one of those things that there’s so many ways to look at it and so many ways to justify one way or another, spending a few dollars more or not, it can be rough.

Tray form does not come with stock cooler. You will need to add it. Deepcool Gammaxx 400 or Cooler Master Hyper 212 will be more than enough.

Yeah I’m starting to see that.

Is that absolutely necessary? I’m trying to stay under $500.

Yes, CPU needs cooling. If you want less headroom for boost, you can go with cheaper coolers.

I think Intel stock coolers with copper base is around USD 8.

I’ll add it to the list.

Ryzen 3 3100 for $100.

I’d get this over the 10100 since it’s not $130

Or not backordered

If you have to buy a cooler anyway, better to get this with the gigabyte b550 ds3h for $85

Wouldn’t i have to switch the motherboard again? Pcpartpicker isn’t showing that one in the list compatible cpu’s nor that one gone with the Gigabyte B460m with wifi.
