Broken character?

I’m a new World of Warcraft player. It fascinated me growing up but I never had a PC and my uncle would never let me play.

Now, I’m getting into PC gaming, so I’ve decided to play WoW. My highest level character is a level 35 Elementalist Shaman, and I’m in a zone where the mobs are level 30. I noticed before, mobs would scale to my level but not here. As soon as I hit level 35 from 34, I now one shot everything.

Seriously.

Even the rare spawn and the Elite spawn that says it recommends two players to defeat. One shotted both. I cant remember the area but the Elite spawn was a fish named Cragjaw I think? Is this some bug I need to report or do I just need to move to a higher level area? I’m kind of a completionist so if there are quests I like to do them, but they’re nowhere near as fun when nothing can even withstand a DoT…

Thanks in advance, guys!

Welcome to Azeroth!

Your character is not broken.

Mobs do scale to your character - MOST of the time, and within very specific limits.

There are 10 expansions to the original game. Each one has a continent, or some specific land mass(es) belonging.

Each expansion has mobs that scale between level 10 and level 70. However, you are in Kalimdor (and Eastern Kingdoms) which are part of the original game, and scale only to 30. So you need to move on to meet higher level characters.

As a new player, the devs WANT you to enter “Chromie Time” and go to the Dragonflight expansion. It is an excellent expansion to start.

You enter Chromie Time by talking to Chromie, who appears as a Gnome outside the Stormwind Embassy. You will find it on your map.

If you talk to her, she will give you a quest to start an expedition to the Dragon Isles, if it isn’t already in your Quest Log. That will get you to meet characters of your own level.

That would be Stonetalon Mountains, in Kalimdor.

Alts! Alts Are The Way.

I see you have already discovered alts because you are posting on one - a level 10 Mage.

If you want to make multiple alts and quest them, you can get them all up to 30 in various zones of Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms. A great way to get to know everywhere when you are not progressing on your main.

So go talk to Chromie, and get on to the Dragon Isles, and leave the original zones for your alts to mop up later! :+1:

This video is massively long, but broken up into 1- or 2-minute chapters, with a Table of Contents in the video’s extended description. It covers A LOT of what a newcomer may want to know.

I’ll also drop a link to

where you can also search for anything you might want to know.

And do please ask again if you want a hand with anything else.

You posted this in the Pet Battles forum, but you might take a look at the New Players forum

where you might find it useful to read around at other questions newcomers have asked. I certainly did when I was new.

I tried to do the New Players section, I was posting from my phone and we all know how janky mobile web can be lol… sorry about that.

Either way, thank you for your incredibly detailed and well thought out response. You’ve been so helpful! I’ve been thinking of going to the Dragon Isles because I have the scale/quest in my log but wasn’t sure when I should go but for sure I will now!

Thanks so much, again!
