Design philosiphy took a U turn back around WoD.
Bring the Player; Not the Class is maybe the worst thing they’ve ever done. I hope it does in a fire and doesn’t get resurrected.
It doesn’t work. They just have to strike a reasonable balance between two extremes.
In order to truly embrace the “bring the player, not the class” philosophy, you have to make every class equal.
So, you balance everything because even 1% difference incentivizes bringing a particular class. Then, you make sure no class can bring any unique utility to the group. So, everyone gets everything and all the classes are homogenized. Or, you go the other way and remove all the cool and fun flavorful things and all the classes are homogenized but much more boring now.
They settled on the better version where you emphasize groups having a diversity of classes to gain access to as many cool things as possible, and you try to make all the classes fun so that the majority of players will enjoy playing more than 1.
